I use docker a lot now. Regarding e2e tests though or even unit tests these would typically be in the same project/repo. While you can have a dockerfile file to run this in same repo, in its own folder, just imagine that you could be sharing some npm modules in your main package.json as dev dependencies. When you use docker to encapsulate different services it nicely compartnentalises microservices that eacch serve a different purpose but you are ineffectively reinstalling dependencies that could otherwise be shared. Pnpm for example reuses node modules so you aren't constantly hitting the internet and racking up bandwidth use. Docker has its place for working between different environments, production etc. It maybe good to experiment locally with it but its not an efficient usecase in my opinion for local e2e testing.
I am having hell with the cypress docker image running inside Bitbucket Pipelines. It takes more than a minute to just fetch the dependencies and install them – locally it takes 5 secs. I think I am going to follow your some of your suggestions!
