Yes, we use a coding test to weed out low-skill candidates. And there are a lot of them. And we spend a lot of time going through resumes too, most of which are junk. What you call a lack of care or concern, I call prudence. I am hiring to do a job, and that job requires certain skills, not the least of which is the ability to perform under pressure. If they can't complete a simple test in a few minutes, then I think that regardless of what other qualities they may have, they still can't do the job at hand.

I don't think I'm perfect at picking candidates, and I understand well the human element involved in hiring. But I need someone to do the job - I can't worry about who "deserves" it most. Perhaps the problem is not the test, but that we no longer teach children how to perform well on tests.
