You might have heard of the web or at least you use the internet. If yes, the evolution of the web is incomplete without you the users. Here's the evolution of the world wide web.

The evolution of the internet

Web 1.0

The web started from web 1.0. Web 1.0 is the earliest version of the internet. The earlier version of the web was composed of web pages joined by using hyperlinks. Hyperlinks are simply electronic links that provide direct access to pages on the web. Web 1.0 was designed to help users find information, it was dedicated to users searching for data. This web version is sometimes called the "the read-only web". This is because it lacked interactivity, visuals, controls. The web later revolutionised into web 2.0, "the social web".

Web 2.0

Like Web 1.0 , Web 2.0 is another phase in the evolution of the internet. It describes the current state of the web. The "social web" as we know it. Unlike Web 1.0, Web 2.0 allows users to participate in the user experience rather than just searching for data. It was designed for users to collaborate and interact.

Web 3.0

The "decentralised web" was termed by a computer scientist and also the co-founder of Ethereum, Gavin wood. Ethereum is a technology that's home to digital money, payments and applications. You can learn about Ethereum Web 3.0 eliminates the function of Web 2.0 such as social media platforms. Web 3.0 focuses on creating content. Unlike Web 2.0, Web 3.0 works on higher scalability and cybersecurity because it is built on the blockchain.

Web 2.0 vs Web 3.0

The different phases of the web came with their own uniqueness and functionality but we would be looking at some of the differences between these stages of the web.
Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 come from similar backgrounds of the web although with differnt approach to challenges.
While web 3 aims to connect people through social media platforms, Web 3.0 combines this data along with trust through decentralisation.
Web 2.0 applications include podcast, blogs and video sites while Web 3.0 incorporates AI and machine-learning dApps, virtual worlds and 3D portals.
In terms of technology, Web 2.0 which is client-side based, which means the program that runs on the browser and deals with the user-interface. Web 2.0 also works with technologies but the most common technologies are AJAX(Asynchronous JavaScript And XML), HTML5 and CSS3. Web 3.0 technologies are powered by machine learning, decentralised apps, semantic web and deep learning. With Web 2.0, the network assumes control of the storage of information, causing issues to access and protection of online data. Whereas Web 3.0 helped to solve this issue by letting the data be exchanged to different locations simultaneously.
When it comes to speed,Web 2.0 is faster than Web 3.0 when it comes to transfer of data this is due to the fact that data is kept in a fixed place using a single server unlike Web 3.0 that assigns data to numerous locations.
I know you must be wondering how Web 2.0 influences Web 3.0, well it should since it's a phase that ushered in Web 3.0. Let's dive in to find out more.

How Web 2.0 influences Web 3.0

Let's look at some Web 3.0 technologies influenced by Web 2.0.

  • Solidity : If you are into the Web 3.0 space you have probably learnt or used this technology. Solidity was developed by the Ethereum foundation and it is the first smart contract programming language. You can learn more about smart contracts. Solidity is heavily influenced by C++, Python and Javascript. All of which are Web 2.0 technologies. You can learn more about Solidity

  • Solana : Solana started off as an open-source project by the Solana Foundation. It is a blockchain platform for hosting scalable and decentralised applications. Solana is written and influenced by Rust. Rust is a general purpose programming language which is adopted by tech companies like Meta, Amazon, Discord, Microsoft, these companies paved the way for the "social web". You can learn more about Solana

  • Polygon(MATIC) : Polygon formerly MATIC network is a blockchain platform that aims to create a multi-chain blockchain system compatible with Ethereum. MATIC is basically Polygon’s token or native cryptocurrency that is used for the development of the Polygon network It also enable networks to connect scale. Polygon was built on Go, an open-source programming language supported by Google. If you want to find out more about Polygon, you can.

  • Coinbase : Coinbase is a secure online platform for buying, selling, transferring, and storing cryptocurrency. If you are into the cryptocurrency space , you have probably heard about coinbase. Coinbase is influenced by Typescript and React Native for the mobile app both of these which are powered by Javascript. Feel free to check out more about coinbase

  • OpenSea : If you are into the NFT's and mints space, then OpenSea rings a bell. OpenSea is the world's first and largest web3 marketplace for NFTs and crypto collectibles. You can trade NFT's using this platform. NFT stands for non-fungible tokens. OpenSea is influenced by Javascript and Ruby. You can learn more about NFT's

Conclusion

If you are like me, learning about the web space. You might be in the Web 2.0 space or the Web 3.0. You should note that Web3 is mostly built around Javascript language. As frameworks which are used to build the applications are Javascript frameworks, which are ReactJs, ExpressJs, and nodeJs therefore Javascript can be considered as the main language in the development of applications. My point is if you're moving into the Web3 space, you should learn the foundation and start with the basics first. In the end, Web 2.0 continues to influence Web 3.0. Thanks for stopping by👍👋
