I manage a lot of WordPress and Drupal sites in my job and I have a similar experience to your own. Many of the sites I work with started off small, but later grow into something much larger. In my experience WordPress is not good at adapting to this sort of growth without using lots of badly built and vulnerable plugins. Drupal 8 on the other hand is actually based on Symfony and while it has a steeper learning curve it really encourages good code which helps with maintenance over time. It also has a dedicated security team that regularly review plugins (modules in the Drupal world). You should give Drupal 8 a shot.
