Question: new tech or old tech on a portfolio?

If you are a hiring manager, which looks better on a portfolio something written in new tech or old tech?

Besides my passion projects, I've been wanting to write something that would look nice on a portfolio (maybe an issue tracker?). My first thought was Astro, but maybe Ruby on Rails would be good too.

Thoughts?

I'd bias towards new tech, all else equal, but it is a good question.

At the end of the day, you want to establish an appealing story for what you bring to the table, but also one that is true to your skills and interests.

Thanks! I'm still in my first tech job, and what struck me was all the older tools I had to learn. But I can't say I'm particularly interested in Rails, Wordpress, and the like

I think over time its good to show that you have used a wide variety of technologies. This shows they hiring manager width of knowledge and learnability. And as much as you read about the new flashy tech big company X uses, most of the tech used in the world is OLD TECH. Sure they might be trying to modernize here & there. But if they are a multi year established company they are running on old tech.

Overall, have a pocket fully of both

It takes time. Being in a hurry to gain it all wont work. But when variety is in front of you, dive in deep.
