Extremely well put, agreed on all points. RSS is a great example - sad to see Aaron's work being barely used anymore after the google reader kill-off, not to mention what's going on with reddit...

This is marvelous. I do think that part of more open standards needs to include a more democratic approach to standards development and ratification. Far too many standards committees are dominated by academic institutions and massive corporations. This is a process that centers money, power, and white cultural norms, and it is inequitable when we look at it from a global scale.
Calling for more open standards really should include a push for more diverse voices and perspectives, as well as the development of institutions and collectives that are independent of traditional power-brokers in tech.
Democracy is a messy business, which makes it a perfect fit for open standards development.
Agree 10000% and Apple please buy NEST.
Very good article, thanks you 🤩
Thank you!
I think we are becoming aware of something that we still have difficulty formulating and pointing out. "Open Standards" is a way but i find its frame "just" points to another pattern that we seem to just say we should all adopt more of. But rarily does this more than feeling inspired in the shortterm and uninspired in the longterm. There is something missing. I think we need to start to see that the issue is much deeper, its actually within our perception and we find our selfst unable to see it. I want to bring awareness to these projects that tries to bring the insights from the architect Christoper Alexander to software and find they have good language we might want to adopt.
👍 Agreed! I'm still mad about Google Music.
I'd be interested in learning about the things you switched to, how the process went, what the shortcomings and gotchas are and how you overcame them.
