Interestingly, in almost 30 years in the industry (10 of which have involved building and hiring teams) I've found that there generally seems to be an inverse correlation between the quality/skill of the developer, and the amount of effort they put into 'branding' themselves. This has become increasingly pronounced in recent years.

I think there is overdoing it.

My blog (once a month) did help me find a job because it showed I was passionate and willing to share knowledge. However, if I wrote "opinion pieces" it would not have helped me.
Branding only works as an ADDITION to development work, not in place of.

Thanks for sharing your perspective! It's interesting to hear about your experience. In this article, I explored how personal branding can complement technical skills as I have no experience with a developer with a personal brand perceived as having lower skill or quality.

I'm curious to learn more about the situations where you believe personal branding may prove beneficial. Would you mind sharing some examples from your experience?

Cheers! 🍻

In my experience, it rarely proves beneficial unless you manage to come across as very unique or interesting - which is exceedingly rare. Most self-branding I see from developers make them seem more like one of the herd, rather than sticking out as being something different or exceptional.

Nice! thank you. I never thought about building a "brand".. I am extremely introverted and not sure about the message I want to put out there (or whether I should at all). Sometimes my message is professional, knowledgeable, sometimes it's friendly, but mostly it's furious, haha.

But you never know, maybe your tips will come in handy one day.

You're welcome, Lev Nahar!

And of course you should consider about building your own brand- but no need to hurry, do it when you feel like doing it!

Don't hesitate to drop me a message if you need any help, I would be more than happy to help a fellow introvert! ✌

Such a great write-up, thanks for sharing. I hit an interesting dilemma when I wanted to change my brand.

Once you establish (willingly or by accident) a brand for yourself, in my case, Swift app development. It becomes a real challenge when you want to change that brand somehow.

Now I am faced with trying to adapt people to see the new 'me' or realize that it makes more sense to stay with the one I have since it has such good traction at this point.
