I am teaching my first Data Science Class in less than a week. 10th of August, 2019 to be precise.
This article was originally going to be named after the Netflix documentary "THE GREAT HACK" but then i wasn't sure how to connect the dots from there, so i am keeping it simple lol.
Every business should be interested in the Science and Art of Data. Data is the new 'Oil Boom', it is what separates the Haves from the Have-nots.
What is Data Science?
Data Science is about storytelling and making sense of numbers. It turns all kinds of Data into actionable insight to allow for better informed decision making.
The understanding of 'Data' is at the bedrock of most successful companies.
With Data Science you can predict future consumer behaviors, develop relevant products for the right target group.
Developers/businesses have carved the habit of developing products that they care about,and not necessarily what the end user would love to use.
Finding out what people want now, what they would want to have in the future, looking deeper into data and being able to manipulate and understand data is what will make you stand out from your competition.
I remember following closely the Simputer project in India. The prediction was that it was going to be the developing countries greatest innovation. The Simputer was a linux-based handheld computer first released in 2002.
Here is an excerpt from the New York Times about Simputer.
The most significant innovation in computer technology in 2001 was not Apple's gleaming titanium PowerBook G4 or Microsoft's Windows XP. It was the Simputer, a Net-linked, radically simple portable computer, intended to bring the computer revolution to the third world.
Simputer became a big failure. They planned to sell 50, 000 devices but ended up selling less than 5000 by the end of 2006.
I think they failed because they didn't have the tools to work with Big Data, algorithms, and machine learning.
Before you come out with a new app/product, better be sure you understand those who would end up using your app/product.
