I started my career in 1987 and yep I remember you'd call up Oracle HQ here in UK and request they post you patches in the post. You wait 2 days for them to arrive!

I remember the first time I downloaded a set of graphic drivers for Windows 3.1 from an FTP site over 2400 baud modem, it's was like a miracle.

2001 working at a trading company for just 3 weeks where realtime prices come in every minute and one day they suddenly stopped. I had said I had some Linux admin experience to get the job. The led me to the back of the computer room, showed me this beat up, caseless PC with the HD hanging on to its cables for dear life! They handed me a manky Post-IT note with the root password...

I managed to get in, clear out garbage in /tmp and working again. Afternoon spent demanding money to buy new server and a proper supported copy of RHEL!!
