I had no idea Stack Overflow had chat. We're actually building in some chat into dev.to, not necessarily to act the same way as some of these traditional chat rooms, but experimenting with ways it can be complementary to the rest of the ways folks interact on the site.
I've always found chat rooms one of the hardest things to keep up with and get introduced into because there is so much context to juggle, so we're trying to keep that in mind as we slowly build out our chat features.
With that in mind I don't have a lot to add because I've never personally been satisfied with a lot of these chat-based platforms over the longrun. So I haven't stuck around with any.
Nice! What stack are you using for building dev.to chat?
I find chat useful for immediate feedback on doubts and asking tangential questions in real time.
Chat rooms do become cumbersome or too fine-grained (e.g too many channels) for new users. Another issue is potential toxicity/hostility in some chat rooms. Without moderators, it becomes very intimidating for many.
For further actions, you may consider blocking this person and/or reporting abuse
