As a former business analyst, I will summarise the key responsibilities and skills required for this role.
The business analyst is responsible for designing software and must be familiar with the operation and processes of the specific business segment. They gather and document the requirements for the system, perform customer interviews, create functional specifications, and handle new requirements.
A business analyst is different from a systems analyst as they must thoroughly comprehend client needs, whereas a system analyst refers to someone who has technical skills also.
The business analyst collaborates with the project sponsor, who owns the project and establishes the project’s goals, and the project manager, who is responsible for the project’s implementation. He/she also works with the users, both internal and external, to establish the needs of all stakeholders while defining the requirements and solutions planned afterward. Additionally, the business analyst works with developers, such as software developers, architects, DevOps engineers, and testers to ensure the system developed meets the requirements.
The primary tasks of a business analyst include understanding customer needs, translating them into clear requirements, processing customer interviews and written information, and validating requirements produced from them. Preparation is a must for client interviews to discuss the current business process and appropriate regulations. The requirements list compiled from customer interviews forms the basis of the future IT system, which must meet the application’s requirements.
Business analysts also analyze business processes during client interviews. Business analysts must also have excellent communication skills to work with different stakeholders, critical thinking skills to analyze complex problems, and technical skills to understand the software development process. Finally, they must be adaptable, flexible, and able to work in a fast-paced environment to meet project deadlines.
