Improving Human-Computer Interaction

Introduction

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is research in the design and the use of computer technology, which focuses on the interfaces between people (users) and computers.

A device that allows interaction between a human being and a computer is known as a "Human-computer Interface (HCI)."

The primary objective is to enhance communication between humans and computers and ensure user satisfaction. To achieve this, many fields contribute to this study, including computer science, design, communication theory, linguistics, psychology, and social studies.
Some examples of HCI applications include Graphical User Interfaces (GUI), Voice User Interfaces (VUI), and VR/AR technology. These interfaces offer alternatives to traditional command input methods, allowing users to interact with computers using keyboards, mice, voice commands, eye movements, and sensory input.

What are the Trends in HCI for 2023 and 2024?
I've come across several blog articles about HCI trends in 2023 and 2024.

10 Top Human Computer Interaction Examples in 2023 & 2024

As technology advances, human-computer interaction systems have improved significantly. This means that technology is now designed with the user in mind, enhancing productivity and user satisfaction, and reducing errors and frustration. Advanced technology has also made it possible for people with different abilities and disabilities, particularly in healthcare and mobility.

The top 10 HCI fields in 2023 and 2024 include education, healthcare, gaming, fintech, marketing, retail, manufacturing, food and beverage, automotive, and entertainment. Furthermore, as technology has advanced, HCI is not limited to interactions between humans and desktop computers but extends to mobile devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches, and VR goggles. Additionally, advanced technologies have enabled us to use our voices, eye movements, and senses.

What Should We Consider?

  1. UX (User Experience)
The primary objective is user satisfaction, so the design must be aesthetically and emotionally appealing, intuitive, and easy to use.

  2. Technology
While technology has evolved significantly, this is the key to creating the applications and services we desire.
An intriguing historical note is the Shoebox, a computer developed by IBM for speech recognition, dating back to 1961.

  3. User Diversity
It's essential to account for a diverse range of backgrounds, including age, gender, culture, education, abilities, and personality.

In addition, ongoing attention to privacy, security, and accessibility is crucial.

What Can Designers and Developers Do?
I started researching HCI and its trends as part of my class project. Before this, I had little knowledge about the field, and I was amazed at the rapid evolution of technologies and applications. I felt a little embarrassed that I had not been actively researching and updating myself.
With my limited experience as a designer and developer, all I can do now is acknowledge the importance of ongoing research and skill development to stay current in the ever-evolving technology landscape.

What are the technologies that have recently amazed you?
