How do I estimate my Carrier IP charges in AWS Wavelength zone?

After getting to know about AWS Wavelength Zones availability, I was curious to know about hosting services in WL zones and before that, obviously wanted to know my budget & expense incurred, in launching services there.

This blog is about getting know on approximate estimate of owning IP address in a WL.

Lets begin !!

AWS Wavelength

AWS Wavelength can be utilized for applications which are for Mobile Device users which demand ultra low latencies, to the devices & end users, as well. This is new type of infrastructure, that is created for mobile networks

AWS Wavelength Zone

Wavelength Zones is an extension to AWS Region, basically a Zone in the carrier location.

Carrier IP

Carrier IP, is a identifier or address to an EC2 instance, that resides in a subnet within a AWS Wavelength Zone. With this, applications or user can address or reach the EC2 instance which is hosted & available to perform any compute operation(s)

Here is the step wise details for estimating in taking up couple of EC2 instances and carrier IP for them

Step 1

  • open the AWS Pricing Calculator Link. Now click on "Create Estimate" to start with your estimation process

  • Now, there are options to estimate by "Location" type or by "Services". Since the use case is about "AWS Wavelength", select "search by location type".
  • select "Wavelength in Location" search box, there are 'Region' & 'Local Zones' along with 'wavelength' under "Location" option
  • Out of the options listed from many regions like Asia, US & others, I chose "Canada" as "Wavelength Zone" where carrier provider is Bell

Step 2

  • Next is to select the services for which, I would like to have an estimate, hence, select "Amazon Carrier IP" by clicking on "Configure"

  • Interest in knowing the cost of having 2 Carrier IP address, and let us see what details are to be provided in order to know the cost

Step 3

  • There are quite some details requested, let us fill in the order

Image description

  • In need to minimum 2 carrier IP address for couple of compute resources, hence 2 & 2 for "Number of Carrier IP per instance" and Number of instances" respectively
  • My use case, will need the carrier IP always attached to the instance and hence am splitting 12 hours of active and 12 hours of inactive(stopped) state for my 2 compute resources. * This is the reason why I have put 360 each for "No. of hours CIP is attached to EC2" and "No. of hours CIP is attached to stopped EC2" here
  • Total monthly cost is given here but for more details, click on "Show Details" section

Step 4

Image description

  • Complete details of 10.80 USD is narrated here
  • Also note that first CIP is free and hence this is pricing for 2nd CIP charges
  • so this gives an idea of how much needs to be invested for given source of compute resources and having a dedicated CIP(a couple of them) in a Wavelength use case

Step 5

  • Estimate summary can be stored, Viewed, edited or even grouped as necessary and above is how this newly created estimate looks in list view

I am sure this gives confidence for many teams/people who would like to try new services or areas that might better suit their business requirements, yet didn't go for it, because of the unknown costs involved in them. Now on, I insist even individuals to use AWS Pricing Calculator to assess how much it should incur on using services of your choice.

Happy Estimate Guys !!
