Ooh I love the distinction between denotation and connotation! That's a nifty way of framing the purpose of the image within its context; denotation does not change from article to article, but connotation does.
I've personally been trying to think of alt text as a replacement within its context rather than a description of the image; actually wrote about it fairly recently ^^
