What is the history of solar energy and when were solar panels invented?
Despite the fact that solar energy has come a long way evidently and visibly proving to be some of the most efficient solutions mankind has been able to discover. It has proven time and again that it is one of the smartest inventions that could change the face of energy usage for the better. But it wasn’t always this way. When was solar energy first used?
Solar energy was potentially put into use by mankind as early as dating back to the 7th century B.C. History depicts to us clearly, that man used sunlight and materials like a magnifying glass to kindle up fires. As time progressed, the Greeks and Romans were known to yoke solar power with the help of mirrors & light torches in the 3rd century B.C. for religious events and similar purposes. These mirrors that were once funny’ became a normalized typical tool that started to be known as “burning mirrors.” Quite later in about 20 A.D., Chinese culture reports predicted and prove the use of mirrors for the very same use. Another early use of solar energy that is active and relevant to this day, is the idea of “sunrooms” in buildings. Huge windows were used by these sunrooms to funnel sunlight into one focused area.
Sunrooms were some of the well-known Roman bathhouses, typically found on the south-facing side of most buildings. Further, in the 1200s A.D., ancestors of the Pueblo Native Americans which are also known as the Anasazi were situated on cliffs in south-facing abodes to soak up the warmth of the sun during the bitter winter seasons.
Researchers and scientists successfully used sunlight to power ovens for extensive voyages in the late 1700s and 1800s. They also used the sun’s energy to generate solar-powered steamboats, too. Thus, it clearly shows that our ancestors had an idea of how the sun could be used and different ways to use its capability for their benefits.
We have certainly come a long way forward and with quite a lot of developments made on the way. Science is still researching every step and detail hoping to make ‘flying chariots’ a reality once again, but this time in the context of solar energy.
