Augmented Reality...but for restaurants!?

My journey into the illustrious world of programming!

Prior to university, I had no real experience with programming. I had heard all about it, seen it even (thanks to some very intelligent family members!) but had no idea what was in store for me. In 2016, I decided to take up a Computer Science university course and I'm happy to admit it's been an amazing time for me. I've gained a huge range of skills but really wanted to really go for something unique and new for my university dissertation.

Although I had no experience with Augmented Reality, nor Unity or even C#, I took the plunge. Initially, I spent very little time coding and a LOT of time debugging, but eventually, things got better. I began understanding set syntax and jargon and got into the creative flow of things. I'm proud to admit my struggles led me to where I am now, a soon to be computer science graduate with a dissertation I'm proud of!

Meet Foodify, a mobile Augmented Reality menu alternative for restaurants

My final year university dissertation project, focused on using augmented reality to emulate a digital menu-based system for local restaurants. Created using C#, Unity and the ARCore SDK.

I started building Foodify under strict university deadlines (after all, you only have so much time in your final year!) using Google's ARCore SDK, C# and the Unity Game Engine. Whilst the project still has a long way to go (both in terms of functionality and appearance) it's time for me to stop being so critical on myself!. A lot of students suffer from imposter syndrome and often think their projects or work are never quite good enough. I've felt the same way for a while, but it's time to let the world see some of my creativity and passion :)

I plan on taking Foodify further, implementing a back-end system to allow for user logins and admin control. I'd also love to branch out and speak with local restaurant owners who may want to replace their potentially outdated paper-based systems with something new, that will allow their customers to have an experience they won't ever forget.

If you want to reach out to me to discuss how I developed the application or see any future updates, feel free to follow me on Github or reach out to me on LinkedIn, I'm active on both (a little too active...).
