The Best Website Builders for Developers in 2023

During my first year as a website developer, I've spent countless hours exploring different options for website builders out there. Now I certainly haven't explored all of the possible options out there in depth, but I have used the following four website builders extensively: Hostinger, Wix, WordPress, and ClickFunnels.

In website development there are two main factors to consider; front-end design and back-end development. Some projects may only require your front-end design skills, whilst others will require extensive back-end development. These factors, alongside the context of the project will determine which website building tool is best for you.

Hostinger: Reliability Meets Affordability

When it comes to website building and hosting, Hostinger stands out as an excellent option for developers seeking reliability and affordability. With plans starting at just £2.59 per month, it's an ideal choice for those on a budget. However, there's a small catch; you'll need to commit to a four-year plan to lock in this low rate. But even with the four-year commitment, Hostinger remains more cost-effective than most services charge for a single year.

Advantages of Hostinger:

  • Simple UI Design: Hostinger's user interface is straightforward and easy to navigate, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced developers.
  • Uptime Reliability: Hostinger is known for its exceptional uptime, ensuring your website remains accessible to visitors consistently (99.9% SLA Guaranteed).
  • Fast Server Response Time: Hostinger boasts an impressive server response time of 0.45 seconds, ensuring your website runs smoothly.
  • Budget Pricing Plans: Starting at just £2.59 per month, Hostinger provides excellent value for developers on a tight budget.
  • API Integration: Hostinger offers options for a few different APIs, however still limited in comparison to WordPress.
  • Web Hosting Integration: Hostinger is renowned for its hosting services, and its website builder is integrated with its web hosting packages.

Drawbacks of Hostinger:

  • Limited Template Variety: While Hostinger's templates are user-friendly, they offer limited customization options.
  • Challenging for Creatives: The simplicity of Hostinger's website builder may not be ideal for all projects, especially those requiring intricate design and functionality.
  • Limited Features: Their marketing and e-commerce features are notably less powerful than other services such as Wix.

Wix: Creativity Unleashed with Some Clutter

As one of the most renowned website building tools in the industry, Wix lives up to its expectations in many regards with a wide range of tools and features to offer. If you’re looking for more flexibility when adapting templates, then Wix could be the perfect service for you. However, some of their more advanced features come in at a much higher price point in comparison to other services, so beware!

Advantages of Wix:

  • Free Entry-Level Plan: Wix offers a free plan that allows you to design and launch a website without any upfront costs.
  • Flexible Pricing Plans: Wix provides a range of pricing plans to suit different needs and budgets. Plans start at £4 per month and scale up to £27 per month for the Business VIP plan.
  • Variety of Features: Wix offers a wide array of features, making it suitable for various types of websites. These features include domain connection, ample storage and bandwidth, streaming video capabilities, and more.
  • Template Flexibility: Wix's template-based design approach strikes a balance between simplicity and flexibility. It allows for easy global changes through site themes, customization of individual elements, and extensive media management tools.
  • API-Friendly: Wix boasts an extensive app store that offers a wide range of additional features, both from Wix itself and third-party developers.
  • E-commerce Support: Wix supports e-commerce through its Wix Store app and third-party extensions. You can easily add products, manage inventory, and accept online payments. Marketing tools for email and social media are also available.
  • SEO and Marketing Tools: Wix provides integrations with Google Analytics, Google Ads, and Facebook for visitor information and marketing purposes. It offers comprehensive SEO and site inspection tools, making it easier to improve your site's search rankings.

Drawbacks of Wix:

  • Overwhelming Editor: Wix's editor can be overly clustered and overwhelming at times, which may frustrate users seeking a streamlined experience.
  • Design Approach: Unlike other website builders that use responsive design to adapt sites to desktop and mobile browsers seamlessly, Wix treats desktop and mobile sites as separate entities. Changes made to one version do not automatically apply to the other, requiring additional management.
  • Mobile Templates: Wix's mobile templates may appear outdated compared to modern mobile devices and software.
  • Higher Price Point: While Wix offers a free plan, accessing premium features and removing Wix ads comes at a cost. The Business plans, especially those with advanced e-commerce features, can be relatively expensive.
  • Ads on Free Trial: During the free trial, Wix places ads on your website, which may not align with your project's professionalism.
  • Template Global Design: Wix's template design applies globally, which means you cannot treat different product categories differently on your e-commerce site. This limitation may not suit businesses with diverse product lines.

WordPress: The Industry Standard for Versatility

WordPress, a household name in the web development world, has earned its reputation as the industry standard. Its flexibility, wide range of options, and control make it a go-to choice for developers looking to build anything from blogs to full-fledged websites. With plans starting at just £3 per month, it's also known for being cost-effective.

Advantages of WordPress:

  • Content-Centric: WordPress is ideal for content-heavy websites, making it a strong choice for bloggers, writers, and content creators.
  • Versatility: For users with some technical confidence, WordPress allows for greater control over the website's design and functionality. It can be a suitable platform for those comfortable with basic coding.
  • API Integration: WordPress offers a wide range of different plugins that can be integrated into your website, as well as the capabilities for external API integration.
  • Cost-Effective: You can start with a free plan or select one of the four premium options, beginning at £3 per month.
  • Industry Standard: WordPress is widely recognized and used across industries, making it a safe and reliable choice.

Drawbacks of WordPress:

  • Not Beginner-Friendly: WordPress is not the most beginner-friendly website builder as it demands some familiarity with basic coding to make the most of the platform.
  • Limited Website Features: While WordPress.com excels in content and blogging features, it falls short in terms of overall website features.
  • UI and UX Frustrations: WordPress has frustrating user interface and user experience designs, with the dashboard overly clustered and often requiring multiple windows to be open at the same time to make and preview changes.
  • Customer Support: WordPress's customer support is known to be lacking, potentially leaving you stranded when you encounter issues.

ClickFunnels: A Novice's Launchpad with a Price

ClickFunnels caters to those eager to launch their products or services quickly using their plug-and-play landing page templates. With marketing scripts in place they simplify the process of building sales funnels. With a 14-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, it's a relatively risk-free option. However, its pricing can be daunting, starting at $127 per month, and from my experience, this price tag is hard to justify due to the lack of customization options available and frustrating user experience.

Advantages of ClickFunnels:

  • Template Variety: ClickFunnels provides templates with pre-written marketing scripts, streamlining the sales process.
  • Split Testing: Developers keen on optimising landing page sales conversions will appreciate ClickFunnels' split testing capabilities.
  • Risk-Free Trial: With a 14-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can explore ClickFunnels without significant financial commitment.

Drawbacks of ClickFunnels:

  • Not Beginner-Friendly: ClickFunnels simplifies the process of creating sales funnels, but customization and personalization is a frustrating experience to say the least.
  • Overwhelming Editor: Similar to Wix, ClickFunnels' editor can be overly cluttered and overwhelming, potentially hindering the user experience.
  • High Price Point: Starting at $127 per month, ClickFunnels is among the more expensive options, especially for novice developers.
  • Limited Scope: ClickFunnels is primarily designed for building sales funnels, so it may not be suitable for broader web development projects.
