Amazon S3 has made an important change to their billing policy that will save you money. From May 2024 onwards, you will not be charged for any unauthorized requests trying to access your S3 buckets.
Why the change?
Previously, if someone tried to access your S3 data without proper permissions, you still had to pay for those failed requests. This didn't seem fair, as you were being charged for requests you didn't initiate or want.
To provide a better experience, Amazon has eliminated billing for unauthorized HTTP 403 (Access Denied) error responses when the requests come from outside your AWS account or organization.
What does this mean for you?
- Cost Savings: You won't be charged for any unauthorized attempts to access your S3 buckets, reducing your monthly bill.
- No App Changes: This billing update doesn't require any changes to your applications using S3.
- More Error Codes: In addition to HTTP 403, several other error codes related to unauthorized access are also now free of charge.
This change is rolling out across all AWS regions.
