External Cognition Utilization in Microsoft's User-Centered Products

The three main benefits associated with using external representations for our cognitive processes are identified in the book, 'Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction' by Rogers et al (2001). In this case study, I examined how external cognition is incorporated into the design of Microsoft's products.

Microsoft

1. Externalizing to Reduce Memory Load

Outlook Calendar enables users to keep track of events, meetings, and reminders with ease. Users can easily keep track of these events and reminders by syncing them across desktop and mobile devices. This calendar makes it easy for users to categorize their events, set reminders, and enter different locations for appointments. The externalization of information they encounter in their daily lives results in a significant decrease in a person's memory load.

2. Computational Offloading

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet tool that allows for the organization, storage, and analysis of data in tabular format. By outsourcing information and using it to solve computational problems, this application leads to a significant decrease in a person's memory load.

3. Annotations and Cognitive Tracing

Microsoft To-Do is a note-taking application that enables users to take notes, create lists, store photos, and sync them to all their devices. This is an excellent demonstration of how annotations and cognitive tracing can give users a sense of control and assist them in making decisions.
