With all the tech layoffs happening it feels like a bad time to be asking for a pay rise. But cost of living is increasing, and inflation is still ongoing.
What is your advice to an engineer who believes they deserve a pay rise (several years in same company, increasing responsibilities, good performance)? How would you go about approaching your manager? And would you discuss this issue with your colleagues also?

Try to come up with some leverage, lets say you don't get a raise and you leave. Will the company take a hit? It is easy to find a replacement for you spot?
Do you need a lot of business knowledge? If so then the work speed in the beginning will be really low.
Try to ask others in your team if they also want a reason, more people makes you stronger as well.
If you cannot afford your living talk about the impact for yourself, lets say you cannot afford a car anymore and have to take public transit, this way you might be late to work from now on. That might move your manager to give a raise.
But overall when your manager doesn't agree, then don't be upset because he might be in a bad mood that day, and people can always change their minds later on.
This is really good advice. I like the point about the human angle regarding the manager's mood.
