112 Non-Tech Interview Questions to reflect on

Complete but contemplative off topic. Sit down, grab some pale ale or pomegranate juice and reflect on those questions before your next interview...

This is a great list of "behavioral" questions. These two stuck out as being more in the "lateral thinking" or "talk me through it" style of questions:

Q5: A hammer and a nail cost $1.10 together, and the hammer costs one dollar more than the nail. How much does the nail cost?

Q106: What would happen if you put a mirror in a scanner?

Hopefully the look of surprise on my face wouldn't count against me if I got asked the mirror in a scanner question.

The answer is all white, right? The light from the scanner would just reflect right back down into the scanner. Or would I get bonus points for being like "It depends on which side of the mirror did you put down?"

To me, Q5 is just one that is not as simplistic as it looks on its surface. Your gut reaction is to say "10 cents," but that's before you check your answer.

It reminds of yet another classic interview question:

Q: You have two posts that are 50 meters high, and an 80 meter cable connecting the two of them at the top. The cable, at its lowest, is 10 meters off the ground. How far apart are the two posts?

A: They're right next to each other. The cable would hang down 40 meters from the top, and go directly back up the additional 40 meters to the other pole, resulting in the lowest point of the cable being 10 feet off the ground.

There are a few in there that I think HR would have a problem with because they could easily stray into off-limits areas like politics or religion. It's best to avoid anything that goes too far into an interviewee's personal life. Other than those, it's a good set of questions.

One of my favorite interview questions I was ever asked was "What was the last book you read?". It had been about an elephant orphanage and we then proceeded to have a wonderful conversation about conservation efforts and travel. Needless to say, I got that job. :) Having a personality is important ya'll!

h + n = 1.10
h = n + 1.00
n + n + 1.00 = 1.10
2n = 0.10
n = 0.05

The nail costs 5 cents, excluding sales tax.

" Share one of your trips with us. "

Wat.

Also, what do the little star ratings mean next to each question - is it how important you think the answer is or something? I don't see much to distinguish one- and five-star questions.
