Understand how to effectively debug your JavaScript code using Chrome DevTools.

It's no secret that bugs are an inevitable part of coding. However, they become less intimidating and time-consuming when you have a firm grasp of debugging tools. Today, let's navigate through the labyrinth of code debugging by using one of the most powerful tools at our disposal - Chrome DevTools.

Introduction to Chrome DevTools

Chrome DevTools is a set of web developer tools built directly into the Google Chrome browser. It allows you to do a range of tasks such as editing pages on-the-fly and diagnosing problems quickly, which ultimately helps you build better websites, faster. One of the key functionalities of DevTools is its robust debugging features which we will be focusing on in this post.

Setting up Chrome DevTools

Firstly, to access Chrome DevTools, you can right-click on any webpage and select Inspect, or use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+I (or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac).

On opening DevTools, you'll find several panels such as Elements, Console, Sources, etc. To debug JavaScript, we're interested in the Sources panel.

Debugging JavaScript with Chrome DevTools

1. The Sources Panel

In the Sources panel, you can see your files in the "File Navigator". You can also open files directly by pressing Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) and typing the filename.

2. Breakpoints

A breakpoint is a point in your code where you intentionally pause execution. This is useful when you want to inspect the values at a certain point in time. In the Sources panel, you can set a breakpoint by clicking the line number next to the code where you want to pause.

3. Step Through Code

Once your code execution is paused, you can step through your code and observe the changes in the variable values. There are several controls in DevTools for stepping:

  • Step over next function call: Executes the current function, stepping over any function calls.

  • Step into next function call: Steps into the highlighted function call.

  • Step: Steps into the next function call unless there isn't any in which case it steps to the next line.

  • Step out of current function: Runs remaining lines of the current function and pauses at the parent function.

4. Watch Expressions

In the "Watch" pane, you can specify any expression or variable to watch its value throughout the execution. Click the + button and type an expression that you want to watch.

5. Call Stack

The "Call Stack" pane shows you the order of function calls that got you to where you are now. Each item in the call stack represents a function call. Clicking on a call will take you to the line where that call was made.

6. Scope

The "Scope" pane shows you the values of local and global variables at the current pause of execution.

7. Network Debugging

The Network panel records information about each network operation on your site, including detailed timing data, HTTP request and response headers, and more. This can be extremely helpful for debugging AJAX requests or other network-related issues.

Debugging Libraries and Frameworks

Most libraries and frameworks minimize their JavaScript files for production use. The problem is, it makes debugging much harder because the code becomes unreadable. Luckily, there's a way around this.

Chrome DevTools provides a Pretty Print button ( {} icon in the bottom left of the Sources panel) that unminimizes the code, making it readable and debuggable.
