Dev.to for CodeNewbies?

As a CodeNewbie myself, I seem to struggle to find many relatable or "interesting" blog posts mainly because I am not of the level in my career to understand the newest features of the new technologies, or use GraphQL, or use react hooks.

Now, I could set goals of learning all these things (which I might very well do in the future) but for now, I want to ask you guys;

What are your suggestions for making dev.to as CodeNewbie as possible so that my notifications are more on my level? Other than following the #CodeNewbie tag and setting the follow weight higher? Please discuss! Thanks.

For those that didn't know, you can set follow weights on your tags by going to your dashboard -> following, as seen below:

Tag weights is a great place to start.

You can also change your "experience level" in dev.to/settings/misc which will gently nudge your feed in the direction of your experience from 1-10.

Also following anyone who consistently puts out good newbie-oriented content will help your feed/notifications trend in a more newbie-friendly direction on top of just the tags.

Great meta discussion.

Everything described in my answer points to a general "hidden-ness" of some of the features like this that we hope to make more clear and accessible through ongoing design adjustments. 😊

I've learned that following people who post more for newbies has helped my feed trend more towards newbie stuff just like Ben said.

If you want, please feel free to take a look at my posts. I am a newbie myself (1.5 years in - still looking for my first role). I normally post on beginner friendly topics so I can gain a deeper understanding of them myself. 😊

Thank you for the reply Ben! Wow, I definitely did not know about the "experience level" setting. Although how do I judge if I am a level 1 or level 3 etc? Everyone will see it differently.

I hope the more I stalk #codeNewbie, I will find more people to follow and therefore more content tailored to me. I have been MIA from dev.to because of the difficulty I had finding "newbie" content but I will persevere this time!
Thanks :)

I chose 3 for myself. One great thing is that you can update it if you feel like you picked the wrong one!

Could be something on the signup phase where it asks what kind of experience you have (Newbie, student, junior etc) then suggest some tags for the user to follow and some threads to read to start off with?

And then that choice when signing up can set their "experience level" at dev.to/settings/misc from the get go. Although, I'm still not really sure what the 1-10 represents whether 1 is literally no coding idea at all, or a student learning for about a year like me. Someones level 5 experience may be totally different from my view of level 5 experience haha
