Always wanted to ask: What does "Principal x" mean and do I become one as soon as I pass 35 or can I be just a plain ol developer until like 65? Maybe a bit off topic but hey :D
Hah! I know plenty of engineers that are well over 35 that are Sr Developers and are very very good at their jobs.
I think Principal or Distinguished mean different things at different companies. For me, I wanted my next big thing after my previous job as a Director to be very technical, hands on, and focused on solving tough problems. I also want to be able to a mentor and technical leader within my realm of expertise without having to manage people.
