Problem statement
Given two integer arrays preorder
and inorder
where preorder
is the preorder traversal of a binary tree and inorder
is the inorder traversal of the same tree, construct and return the binary tree.

Example 1:
Input: preorder = [3, 9, 20, 15, 7], inorder = [9, 3, 15, 20, 7]
Output: [3, 9, 20, null, null, 15, 7]
Example 2:
Input: preorder = [-1], inorder = [-1]
Output: [-1]
Constraints:
- 1 <= preorder.length <= 3000
- inorder.length == preorder.length
- -3000 <= preorder[i], inorder[i] <= 3000
- preorder and inorder consist of unique values.
- Each value of inorder also appears in preorder.
- preorder is guaranteed to be the preorder traversal of the tree.
- inorder is guaranteed to be the inorder traversal of the tree.
Explanation
Brute force approach
The preorder sequence pattern is root-left-right and the inorder sequence is left-root-right. Node 3 in this preorder sequence [3, 9, 20, 15, 7] is the root. We search for node 3 in the inorder sequence. All the elements to the left of 3 in the inorder sequence belong to the left subtree and the elements to the right of it belong to the right subtree.

The time complexity of this approach is O(n^2). The space complexity is O(n). The extra space is due to the recursive call stack.
Efficient solution: Using Map
We can optimize the search function by using hashing. We store the indexes of inorder sequence in a hash map.

The time complexity of this approach is O(n). The space complexity is O(n). The extra space is used to store the elements in the map also due to the recursive function call stack.
Efficient solution: Using Stack
Instead of a map, we can also solve the problem using a stack and set. The stack will be used to store the path we traversed when iterating over the preorder array, and the set is used to maintain the node in which the next right subtree is expected.
