In IT, I think career progression does not mean anything. One day you are a team lead of a project or their manager and the next day you apply for a job somewhere else and you are a junior again.

Why?

Well, every job has a different level of knowledge needed. So in the end career progression or your title does not mean anything. But the before-mentioned knowledge is something that could tell you more about your progress. For example, did you start answering questions on SO, do you maintain a project, do you dig in internals and fix stuff instead of going to SO and just applying a "quick fix"? The last level of your knowledge in something would be if you can properly teach someone and that would mean you can move to another thing, another field and you collect these pieces of knowledge like you would pokemon.
