The internet is growing fast. It always has been but the new era that we are about to enter is more miraculous than ever. But before diving into that stream full of wonders, let’s explore a bit about web 1.0 and web 2.0.
Previous versions of the World Wide Web
At the very start, when web 1.0 was introduced, it only consisted of read-only, static pages with lots and lots of information present at that time about that topic, as you must have witnessed in 90’s movies too. You were able to put anything in the search bar of your browser and can view bundles of information. Or perhaps, we can say, it was more like a whole big Wikipedia. The situation remained there from 1991 to 2004 until web 2.0 was introduced and it started taking over the world of the internet like a storm.
The reign of web 2.0 started in 2004 and it is still on now. It was more interactive and based on targeted advertisements mostly. But it came with a price which was a lack of privacy for every internet user. But truth be told, we gave up this privacy willingly in order to experience this new fantasy-like experience and entertainment options. Now that we have explored web 1.0 and web 2.0 in theory as well as in real life, let’s fasten our seat belts and dive into the details of what the future will be like. Yes, I am talking about web 3.0 here. We are hearing plenty of new words and theories these days like Bitcoin, Metaverse, Blockchain, Crypto, etc. Like me, you also must always be wondering about what exactly is it all about. So without further ado, let’s address the essence of the matter.
Web 3.0 — The real deal
Web 3.0 is basically a technology that utilizes Blockchain technology and tools of decentralization. Where in web 2.0, a user used to be the product and seemed helpless, web 3.0 is here to empower the user by making him the owner of the content. The whole concept of web 3.0 runs around decentralization.
Expected benefits of Web 3.0
- No CEOs or Presidents
Imagine, there are absolutely no CEOs or Presidents in the whole wide world. Web 3.0 technologies are here to turn that imagination into reality. It is said that every company in the world will be run by a decentralized group commonly called DAO (decentralized autonomous organization). The people with the most tokens (the shareholders) will be the decision-makers on how the company will change, which is now limited by government or family traditions.
- No Censorship
Furthermore, in terms of censorship, the idea is absolutely vague to web 3.0 technology, which means there won’t be any sort of censorship on social media or so. One controlling authority won’t be able to shut it down by the rule of web 3.0.
- Untraceability
In addition to that, your digital identity won’t be entirely connected to your real-life identity. Isn’t it fascinating that you can perform any action without the fear of being traced by the internet? Instead, we can be fully anonymous and control what we want people to view.
- Anonymity
With the rise of digital currency, you can also expect that in coming years, you won’t be paying for your amazon orders with cash or so. Instead, you will be able to buy your amazon gift cards using metamask and will be paying with your digital currency like Ethereum etc. Not only that, you will be able to use your social media anonymously. For instance, if you want to drop a like on your friends’ profile picture or post, you will be able to do it anonymously using one of your hidden wallets.
Final Thoughts
But let’s be honest, the world of the internet will not change all at once. These will be slow but steady changes for sure. So we can’t say that we will be expecting some life-changing stuff suddenly. This will most likely be a series of ideas that will grow together until either centralized companies like Facebook, Google, etc. are disassembled by the legislature or decentralized unregulated DAOs will grow enough to replace them officially. But we have our fingers crossed for whatever is coming.
