Interesting approaches. I had a contract which was almost entirely WFH for 9 months. Since then have spent 16 months at home working on my solutions which should finally be market ready soon. So, one experience was working for a company, and the other is working for myself.
The key thing people need to get their head around is the loneliness of it and being stuck in the same place most of the time. It hasn't affected me mentally (I think), because I have stuck to the following rules;

  • Exercise/stretch every day.
  • Go for an open space walk once a week.
  • Take walks every day (In addition to collecting my son from nursery).
  • Spend time with my son.
  • Do use Social Media, but limit it.
  • Be strict with friends and family who try to distract you. This could be having a designated work space.
  • Make it easy to work in different locations. Use the cloud, work on holiday, on the tube.
  • Read online code examples and forums. You need to set standards, as others are not there to keep you in check. This is why I put posts on Dev.To, keeps me sane and it is good to learn from others and share ideas.
  • Set goals but don't get upset if you don't hit them on time. The biggest challenge I have found is that software takes far longer to build than what I thought. This may sound crazy, but when we work onsite, we tend to over-promise, and because we work in teams, we can collaborate to hopefully deliver on-time. When working on your own it is just you and most of your time is spent on other tasks.

I now perceive offices to be fairly unproductive compared to how much I deliver on my own but am not crazy enough to believe I can do it alone.
