My experience with HacktoberFest 2020

Who is ZachyDev?

Hey there!πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹, My name is Zachary Moseti, popularly known as "ZachyDev". I'm a computer science student at the University of Eldoret - Kenya. Currently, I specialize in front end development, however I have explored other technologies like Firebase (GCP), Kotlin & Flutter.

Background

I'm not that new to open source, since I have been contributing to open source projects like awesome-vue in the recent past. However this year's #hactoberfest challenge came as a bonus to further improve my skills on contributing to open source,as usual, I would only say THANK YOU @DigitalOceanπŸ‘

Progress

In this year's edition of HacktoberFest,I submitted a total of 6 pull requests, that's a bonus of two on top of the minimum PRs as specified by Digital Ocean. Amongst the 6 PRs, 4 have passed the 14-review period, the remaining PRs will mature in 1 day. πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Contributions

On this year's HacktoberFest challenge,I majorly contributed to C0D1NG organization's list of open source projects. The reasons why I chose to contribute to C0D1NG are:
β€’ The review period was
short.
β€’ The projects were
friendly & manageable.
β€’ Once the PRs were
merged,one will
automatically receive an
invite to join the
organization
β€’ One had an option to
choose from a variety of
projects and tackle them
using their language of
choice.
Here are the links to the PRs I submitted:

  1. Grocery to-do list πŸ‘‰https://github.com/C0D1NG/Development/pull/72

2.How to fetch data from a REST API demo πŸ‘‰ https://github.com/C0D1NG/Development/pull/128

3.JavaScript implementation of a countdown clock πŸ‘‰ https://github.com/C0D1NG/Development/pull/127

4.FizzBuzz solution challenge πŸ‘‰ https://github.com/NLDev/Hacktoberfest-2020-FizzBuzz/pull/235

  1. Quick select JavaScript algorithm πŸ‘‰ https://github.com/C0D1NG/Algorithms/pull/157

6 JavaScript function to reverse a string πŸ‘‰ https://github.com/C0D1NG/Programming/pull/522

That's the list of PRs I submitted in #hactoberfest challenge 2020πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Reflections

My experience with this year's HacktoberFest has been epic.

I can't wait for HacktoberFest 2021☺️, however this doesn't mean I will stop contributing to Open Source in the time being. My journey to open source has been enlighted by HacktoberFest challenge.

I have learnt a lot in this year's HacktoberFest challenge, including how to contribute to open source projects, how to raise PRs,how to adhere to the standards of open source, such as submitting quality code,to mention afew.

Apart from contributing to open source,I have also networked with other developers from all over the world, and I have come to realize we can work on projects with a team of other developers despite their location. Magic happens in the remote world☺️☺️.

Since this was just a beginning,I will move a step further and contribute to projects which are highly started on Github such as Vue.js,React.js and many more.

A wrap up from me,thanks @DigitalOcean, thanks #Hactoberfest
Long live @DigitalOceanπŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰
