An article dated 8 years ago. Things changed alot in 8 years. I've got married, have 2 kids, and PHP now has better type system and a jit engine. PHP standards can be checked and enforced by various plugins making it hard to write bad code.

Plugins are more boilerplate which is a pain for me to setup just for standards.

Not sure about you but I use php storm and it's 1 click install. I agree though that we need more standards but things are moving at a good pace.

I'd use jetbrains IDEs if I had the money for a license (assuming PHPStorm is like the others and doesn't have a community edition). I use VSC for most my web dev stuff.

You can live on edge and get the free version which contains latest code I think. Downside is that it can be unstable. Last time I checked vs code should make things easy as well for PHP dev. But nothing beats phpstorm right now and I'm happy to pay for it since I become more productive with it.
