I feel that SEO is what killed link pages. They went from an organic "Hey, these are websites I like to look at on the regular, take a look!" to "Here's my link exchange page where we can exchange links using keywords to increase our Google PageRank"
And then they started to bring in less value compared to other methods and SEO houses stopped doing them.
That's an interesting point. I'm no SEO wizard, but I'm vaguely aware that Google introduced some sort of ranking penalty for what they deem "excessive" mutual linking.
I wonder if a bunch of friends linking to each other's sites now would be considered excessive by the algorithm, or whether it's just spammy sites that are obviously taking the mickey.
