What is your morning routine?

So I wanted to try and do at least a post a week, and I didn't have much time to prepare one this week. So I wanted to open up another discussion!

So, to any of you glorious readers stumbling upon this post, what is YOUR morning routine? Wake up and sit on reddit until you're almost late to work? Make sure you got that cup of coffee before attempting anything? Immediately get up and get to coding?

I personally spend a bit too long reddit before stumbling into the shower, getting ready just in time, and racing off to work. On the train to work, listen to some DnD podcasts and study Japanese. Right before arriving to work I make sure to get some tea or water for the day and a coffee. Upon arriving at my desk, it's off to coding right away! Who needs to check emails or read chat anyways.

A few kettlebell swings

Just curious, what's "a few"? I currently do 75 swings with a 13 kg (28.6 lbs) kettlebell, broken down into 3-4 sets with 30 second breaks in between. Goal until the end of this quarter is 100 swings in 4 sets of 25.


Thatโ€™s quite a few ;)


I like that "Walk the pup" is number one thing to do every day.


Dogs are top priority ๐Ÿถ


My ideal morning routine:

  • Wake up without an alarm
  • A glass of water and a cup of coffee
  • Sit down at my laptop and go through some Japanese flashcards
  • Go for a quick run, then shower
  • Walk the dog
  • Read a book on my 35min commute to work

But realistically, depending on when I wake up I might skip the run, and do the flashcards on my commute instead. I sometimes use a Fitbit alarm that vibrates on my wrist to try and wake up early enough but I turn that one off in my sleep sometimes. I prioritise feeling well-rested though so I don't like setting an alarm on my phone to wake me up unless I really needed to.


Man, I would love to be able to go alarmless! I find it getting harder and harder to get out of bed since it's getting so cold! Only really find time to do my Anki cards on the commute


I'm on the other side of the equator so I don't have that problem at the moment! By the way, if you're looking for blog ideas I'd love to hear about how your experience has been working as a developer in Japan.

I thought about doing somethin like that, but nothin really came to mind. But I'll keep thinking and jotting down ideas. Thanks for the advice!


Once you go alarmless itโ€™s pretty sweet.

Itโ€™s more like switching to your internal alarm. And itโ€™s pretty accurate.


I get up, practice typing because I didn't learn proper touch typing when I should have. Get a workout in and then spend 30 to 60 minutes reviewing my blog site. Prepping articles, editing, researching.
After that I go through work emails, get ready for work, and eventually make the drive in. It's about a 30 minute drive so i tend to listen to Audible (development related) or podcasts on the way.


@mattfigler you're not alone on learning how to type!!


Its so hard to stick with after all of these years of looking at the keyboard. I can type about 50 to 60 WPM if I constantly look at the keyboard. But I'm suffering from a lot of this.


Development related audio books? Never even occured to me that might be a thing. Any recommendations?


I have listened to this one twice. When I bought it I wasnt sure if it would be any good, But man there was alot of good advice in there.


Ill go through my library in a few and toss you some more recommendations.

What sites?

  • Try to understand which century it is and whether or not I'm on the right planet
  • Eat a quick breakfast
  • Shower for way longer than necessary
  • Long commute to work, listening to music and generally trying to stay awake
  • Brew a full french press worth of coffee (around 800 ml) because apparently my colleagues prefer my special blend than our regular expresso
  • Reach my desk, power on my laptop and wait for Arch Linux to update
  • Finally start coding. And enjoy flexible work hours that allow me to be that slow in the mornign :D

Read that as "a full bench press worth of coffee". Now that would be a good amount of coffee! (And probably needed ... )


For me, it depends on whether I want to clock in a strength practice session or not. If so:

  • get up at 5:15
  • some light yoga
  • do the Simple & Sinister kettlebell routine
  • as long as my daughter still sleeps: more yoga, meditation, reading
  • take my daughter to give my wife some more sleep (usually around 6 to 6:30)
  • breakfast with my daughter at ~8
  • get ready for work with a cold shower etc
  • off to work at ~8:30-8:45

If I donโ€™t do sports, I just sleep until I wake up with the family.


It took me a while to make this routine work, but now I feel more organized/productive throughout the day when I stick it.

  • drink a glass of water
  • cold shower
  • stretch
  • jump rope (if I have the time)
  • healthy breakfast
  • plan my todos for the day
  • shower
  • shave
  • cereal for breakfast
  • walk to train station (half hour). Listen to news podcast and then some language learning podcast (I alternate between French, Spanish, Korean and Mandarin). I could take the bus, but walking is good exercise.
  • Take train and metro (30 minutes). Do Anki flashcards and watch some tutorial (currently mostly on statistics)
  • make coffee at office, read emails and start coding

I'm also going for a post a week (man that's Hard)
So since I stumbled upon this post while going through the feed, I'll say that the morning routine is something I've been obsessively reading about and trying for the last couple of years.

My routine now is different (because I'm no longer in college and have time โœŒ). In short, I wake up, go to the bathroom, make breakfast then I do some stretching and run to the gym.
I spent about an hour or so there, I go back to my place to read for 15 min and take a shower. Then I get dressed, pick up all the things I'll need for the day.
Wash the dishes, brush my teeth, pack some snacks and head to the office.
And yes I arrive to actually do the work I have. I read somewhere that it's best to check email by afternoon, that way your productivity doesn't get hindered. ๐Ÿค“


Wow! I must ask, what time do you usually wake up in the morning? Seems like you get a lot done before work even starts


Well like I said, I've been looking into routines of other pros for quite some time and also been tweakin' mine every couple months.
But for the last 6 months, I've been experimenting with what could work best from 5 am all up to 6 am.

This month, I've been waking up at 5:30 am and it's ok. Some days I seem to have more time than others. I've planned writing a post about great routines for devs, so let me know if that would be of interest to you and what would you like to see in it.


I stay in bed like 15~30 minutes, try to fuel my brain with natural vibes, I also check my phone I made up a todo list of websites I like to visit before starting my day, watching the trends, playing a chess puzzle, listening one motivational track, anything that I think are really very stimulating for the brain to wake up and place the brain in a computational state (because the day is full of problems to solve).
And then comes the physical awakening, I just try to make some gymnastic moves until I have this happiness feeling and I know my day is going to be easy because I prepared and my body is thanking me.
I then step in the bothering world, wash my glasses, brush my teeth, drink coffee, go out walk, work, you know this part.


Pretty much the same thing every morning for me.

  • Alarm at 4AM - snooze once or twice
  • Feed the cats
  • Brew coffee while preparing my oats (I like it prepared fresh - no pre-prep)
  • Drink coffee
  • Workout warm up, usually some kind of cardio for about 10 minutes
  • Eat breakfast (the oats that now have been sitting long enough)
  • Full workout at home
  • Shower
  • Prepare lunch, do small chores
  • Drink protein shake (most mornings if I worked out hard enough)
  • Look for birds on my property if it's the right time of year
  • Go to work, or to my desk if I am working remote that day ... if it's a weekday

Between those items, I am usually petting or playing with the cats. They love morning time with us.

  • Wake up
  • Make a bottle, milk cup, and a coffee
  • Go out for a vape (if I have time)
  • Wake the kids and wife
  • Feed the baby
  • Shower
  • Drive to work
  • Emails (if I have time)
  • Standup
  • try to flesh out a blog post
  • Rest of day

The Dad, best kind of alarm clock lol

  • Wake up and enjoy the view from the balcony
  • Meditate if not lazy
  • Drive the bike to the coworking space and have breakfast there or on the way
  • Coffee!
  • Work 3-5 hours for my company
  • Have some lunch at coworking or drive to the cafรฉ.
  • Read something
  • Couple of hours doing some pet-projects/learning/writing stuff.
  • Drive back and have some dinner on the way
  • Play PS4! :)
  • Walk the doggo
  • Check my email
  • Shower + beard care ๐Ÿ˜…
  • Wash cups or other dishes from last evening and/or this morning (I hate doing dishes, so nothing worse can happen that day ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ)
  • Drive to work while listening for some upbeat music or podcasts
  • Breakfast at the office while checking chats, email and/or reviewing PRs

My morning "routine" probably ends around 10:30 ๐Ÿ˜…

  • Drink a glass of water
  • Relieve any physical needs (this is important almost immediately after waking up)
  • 5 - 10 mins morning meditation (Important to set myself up for success Sanvello has a good one, but you can also use this from YT )
  • Sometimes I have a cup of green tea (good physical detox effects)
  • Go over any emails or updates from work
  • Breakfast
  • Standup meetings, if any.
  • Code, code, code, code.
  • make a cup of tea
  • prepare breakfast for the kindergarten for both kids
  • prepare breakfast โ€žto goโ€œ for me and my wife
  • wake up the kids and get them dressed
  • take the kids to the kindergarten
  • listen to podcasts or read a book on my 40 minute commute

I an working from home currently. So it looks like this:

  • wake up
  • kiss my wife
  • shower
  • coffee and some fruit for breakfast
  • start the ๐Ÿ’ป

When going to the office there is the commute between shower and coffee, during which I listen to podcasts or (sometimes) music.

  • wake up at 5:30 AM
  • shower
  • breakfast while watching some Laracasts / Udemy lesson
  • 30 minute walk to reach workplace
  • then mayhem starts :-D
  • Cat meows - snooze the cat
  • Cat meows again - snooze the cat
  • Snooze the alarm
  • Snooze the alarm
  • Snooze the alarm
  • Church bells: it's really time to get up
  • Drag to kitchen, make coffee and breakfast
  • Move cat from office chair
  • Read news/look at creative blogs while eating breakfast
  • Tentatively at 9, most days at 9:30: start to work (trying to get to code right away, leaving emails and communications for after noon)
  • A little while later: bring coffee in bed to partner <3
  • Wake up with a vibration of my watch
  • Shower
  • Wake up the kids
  • Prepare the breakfast table
  • Wake up the kids (again)
  • Drink half my coffee scanning my Twitter feed
  • Wake up the kids (again again) AND the wife
  • Eat some bread I made the day before while reading the News
  • Prepare children's toast and milk chocolates
  • Shout for the kids and the wife to get moving (without anger, but firmly)
  • Carry the kids, one by one, to the breakfast table (with anger)
  • Carry a hot chocolate to the wife
  • Telling the little one to eat without bickering
  • Telling the big one to eat before narrating his dream about a skakeboarding unicorn
  • Supervise the kids' tooth brushing
  • Supervise the kids clothing choices
  • Shout at the big one who is running naked in the house
  • Shout at the little one because there's toothpaste on the wall
  • Shout at both of them because there's clothing on the floor
  • Shout again with a touch of dismay because I discover toothpaste on the clothing which was on the floor
  • Kiss the wife goodbye while she's storming in the chair and getting the kids into the car
  • Tidy up the house
  • Clean the house
  • Prepare bread

8:30AM. Now my day can begin :)


This is my everyday reality:

  • Get the kids up
  • Make them lunches (if I forgot last night)
  • Drive junior high carpool to school (one day a week)
  • Get in the shower
  • Drive the remaining kids to school
  • Head into the office (or work from home -- depends on the day)

What I wished I did was take some time for exercise in the morning rather than trying to fit it in during my lunch hour.


Download data back into my brain: who I am, day, time. Sometimes day is wrong.
Protein shake with caffeine.
Thought download and thought work for 5 min.
Get sucked into the phone.
Regroup and get dressed, brush teeth.
Start car at 6am (it is -2 here).
Sucked into phone again.
Grab lunch.
Skip out the door just in time. 6:20am.

  • Create a written list of things I want to do today (I can't rely on my mind, anything can distract me)
  • Make coffee
  • Read something on my commute (usually go(baduk, not golang) books, sometimes news when things aren't going fine)
  • Read emails
  • Check running process from the last working day

Then start doing things I need to do, keeping the list in mind


I work from home:

  1. Walk the office manager (my dog).
  2. Make coffee
  3. Check my finances via YNAB/Bank/Investments
  4. Spend a few minutes on Twitter/Reddit/Hacker News/RSS Reader to catch up on things.
  5. Write in my gratitude journal/make my todo list for the day

After that, I get started working and will go til about 4 or 5 pm.

  • run (usually with podcast, but music for speed work)
