After my first contact with a computer in the 1980's, I taught myself to program in BASIC and Z80 assembler. I went on to study Computer Science and have enjoyed a long career in Software Engineering.
My advice would be to Keep It Simple. As suggested by Clément Gaudinière, you should investigate JavaScript so take a look at MDN developer.mozilla.org/en-US/
Also, don't use SQL in the first instance that requires server-side functions such as PHP, Node/Demo or serverless functions. First use the web storage API to preserve your selections client-side.
