His company is only small (2 employees and 1 volunteer) and the person copying is part of a much larger consultancy firm with large social reach, and they run events for free promoting their work, and this is where the code is being used.

I'm sorry it happened to your friend, Claire. And I agree with the commenters here: your friend should at least call the names and raise visibility on this issue. This way at least some justice will be served.
