The only thing keeping me back from reading WoT is the thiccness of those books. How long does it take you to finish a volume in audio form? Also, RIP James Oliver Rigney.
Each book is about 50 hours. Insane. I'm not sure I'd have the patience for the paperback but the audio's great for commutes and chores.

I am at the point of my development career when after 10 years I feel like I know nothing and it frustrates me. How come I don't know so much! Like these factory patterns. Why do I still not know this? Seems as in the last 6 months I am constantly running into things I don't know, deciding to learn it, and as i am learning it I run into something else I don't know, deciding to learn it and as I am learning it I run into something else I don't know.... It is an infinite loop at this point. Is it just me? haha. Hoping to fall in love with this community and stay here forever! :)

I have been lurking this community since ages, and finally decided to join today!
My short life story:
Did my Bachelors in CS from a shitty college in Pune, India. 3 years of Bachelors turned into 4.5 years because I flunked twice.
Angry with myself, I spent a ton of time researching about the CS/IT industry, and figured my interest lay in web dev.
Went through the usual noob path; did a couple of Udemy courses, made some hobby projects, and finally bagged an internship at Red Hat(MEAN stack + graphQL) while pursuing my Masters in the same college(had to, because of bad grades).
Worked hard for 6 months, but fell short in comparison to other interns, and was jobless for another 6 months.
Finally got a job at an early-stage bootstrapped startup and got my ass kicked when my senior got fired. Took the opportunity and was responsible for developing most of the front-end of their product(React, Redux, Node & mySQL).
Quit the startup after 4 months because the work pressure got way too extreme to handle. We were firefighting everyday!
Currently looking for a job, preferably in front-end web dev, but won't mind doing fullstack.
Also focusing on improving my weak DS&Algorithms skills by reading Princeton Uni's books by Robert Sedgewick(Intro to CS & Algorithms 4th Edition), and planning to work my ass off by solving challenges on Hackerrank, etc.
Joined this community, because I felt that I should start sharing my journey.

What's up everyone? Been a dev for a long time. I have a heavy background in the manufacturing space and have been writing .net since attending the .net launch event in Portland back in 2001, I believe. I've had my own business for like 12+ years. Which sounds cool but it is also lonely. I work remote and by myself. Come to think of it, I don't have a single friend who actually writes code. The beginning of 2019, my wife and I sold our house, purchased a 5th wheel trailer, and now travel the country. We are currently in Oklahoma City. With my desk at the back and a huge window, I've written code with some amazing views this year. But, it is lonely so I figured I'd join a community. This one seems pretty cool.

just discovered DEV through the Medium app (addicted to it lol), it seems really nice and helpful here!
So i am currently working night shifts in a hotel to finance my journey to become a front-end developer (fullstack is the ultimate goal).
At this point (my "awakening" to the dev world happened 1.5 month ago) i know about html/css (and sass). Also familiar with git/github, npm (used it to install sass). I use Atom and learn figma.
Next step : Js.
Last thing, i start the 100daysofcode challenge on saturday 14 december. gotta form that habit of really sitting down to code every single day. Can't wait to see where i'll be at in 3 months...

I'm here to grow as a Web Developer. I built an app + side hustle thanks to detailed blog posts and YouTube tutorials, so I'm planning to blog about some of the things I build for my app and learn more about best practices or cool enhancements I could make.
I built the front end of my app using Next.js and Reactstrap, plus some custom flexbox stylesheets with SASS. The RESTful API is an Express.js server that uses postgreSQL for the persistent layer and Passport for User Auth. I've got these deployed on a DigitalOcean ubuntu droplet, so I'm hoping to contribute content for any of the previously mentioned technologies.

Hello - I came to DEV seeking developers that would want to become test-pilots for a new product - so we can adapt and implement features that we may have missed or didn't think of.
We've presented it to hundreds of developers during web-summit and Slush and it's been very well received - it would be cool to do it a bit more structured.
Most useful for frontend developers I think, including react, graphQL and good old HTML/CSS/JS.
Also - I like the vibe of the community :)

Spent a couple of years in a company programing their Windows APIs, not the most exciting job even less considering that I decided to leave the windows world many years before and didn't miss their updates, now breaking all my integrations, for a bit.
Now I work in my house, well at the moment I'm doing more study than working. But I'll hope that my this time pays back when I start getting some more gigs.
That's, other of the reasons I joined this community, not to search for a job, but to learn from all of you guys, especially the ones who do freelance stuff or work on their own projects as to how they gave the first step into the real business. When they stopped overthinking about what stack they would use for a project and started shipping it.

As far as which languages to learn, that all depends on what type of application you want to write and also which operation system you are writing for. Windows or Linux. Desktop or Web.
I suggest you try to describe the best you can, what you are looking to accomplish and then write a new post about it. I'm sure you'll get lots of different opinions from community members.
I would also suggest you read a little about Markdown language before you actually post. (see the Editor guide which will show when you press the "WRITE A POST" button and then press the ? button at the bottom of that page.

Interesting article. I think it makes sense as a simplified explanation, having in mind that of course the subject is a little more complex.
I want to find a community of unemployed programmers to share experiences, plans and opinions. I'm more leaning towards starting a company rather than trying to become an employee. I'm thinking about how to organize it and how to start. Maybe there are people out there somewhere who thought about this and have interesting thoughts, experiences and advices to share.

Forgot to mention, (as one of options) I'm thinking about creating or joining a distributed team of remote developers.
