Well, from the perspective of career there is a lot of well paid jobs around the world for all levels of knowledge. On a personal basis I love the ability to understand both software and hardware - the latter is more for CE than SE though - and the flexibility to switch from one industry to another without too much effort.
There's a lot of work to do in order to become a good SE and basically you'll never stop studying new stuff but that's the beauty of it, isn't it? :)

I used to be a very skilled programmer a long time ago. For some crazy reason I lost interest in developing and went to try different stuff in other areas. After 6 years I felt really sorry for my bad decision and now I'm trying to make up for lost time. Hello I just heard of this website through RealToughCandy on YouTube and decided to check it out, and it looks great. I'm a front end developer who enjoys creating coding and games development with Unreal and other tools. The programming language I use the most frequently is javascript, and I have been experimenting a lot with Three.js and A-Frame recently. Also working on getting better at React and am currently working on an exciting app using React and Redux. I am a Software Engineer who had first fell in love with Java ... Until life introduced many other flavours during my course of 4+10 years coding (college+work).
Currently I do mainly web development (angular) with backend of Java (still strong this one :) ).
I am enthusiastic about mobile dev, I developed couple of android apps for learn and fun (flutter is my next project).
Worked with GIS for 9 years, python was introduced here.
And oh yeah .. I like having fun with smart things & automations (done few arduino projects).
