Is python your first programming language? If so, good choice! After you get to grips with the basics, May I suggest two tiny frameworks, great to get you started depending on your project: Flask is a small web framework, and Click can help you to write CLI apps.
Apart from that, try to understand virtualenv and requirements.txt. They are simple tools and they will change your #pylife!

Any tips on doing Test-Driven Development (TDD)? Have been thinking of going that direction in a while.
Hello, do you have a specific project in mind to implement such method.? As far as see the TDD is very useful for projects with medium - high complexity, specially when multiple people will touch the code and changes are not allowed to even move the production source code out of the expected.
If your project has a testing framework, the TDD will mean that you first write test cases and then functional code. It is nice to see the test cases failing at first and letting you know when you are doing wrong

bgirly, I believe this too. I also believe the day will come, in the not so distant future, where computers will program themselves by us conveying to them in a few sentences or words, the desired results we expect, leaving the people with the knowledge to program computers to program themselves, at the top of the food chain... until the future recurs.
I agree with you. Though I have not successfully jumped ship, but I am learning thoroughly to see that it's achieved before another new year resolution is made and yes, I started with JavaScript and it's not as much as a beast as they make us newbies think

I randomly saw an article in my google feed (which I ended up tweeting) from dev.to, and I have thought about blogging about my technical experiences a bit, so here I am. :)
I graduated in CS in 2014 and worked as a developer for GM for a while. The corporate life was horrible and I wasn't progressing as a developer. I've since left and have been working at a startup ever since and it's been the best thing for me and my career. It's quick and agile, and I'm always learning new things.
Anyways, I'm here now and even I'm curious what I'll be posting. :)
Developer at GM! Did you develop on the cars? Or probably more like the internal tools for the staff?
They put me on CRM (Customer Relationship Management) using really old software called Siebel owned by Oracle. It was absolutely horrible. There was no coding. Needless to say leaving was the best thing ever. Now it's Docker, Nodejs, React, Redux, AWS, GoLang, Python and all the fun stuff. :)

For my sins, I'm traditionally a DBA, and I currently manage a team of database reliability engineers.
I'm learning dart and flutter because the entrepreneur in me wants to be able to get ideas from my head into apps. I also wanted to learn a versatile language that can be used server and client side.
I'm also one of the co-founders of GDG Bristol to showcase Google tech.
A year ago I would've told myself to focus more and cut out the noise. This is something I'm still trying to achieve!
Why go with dart, instead of JavaScript?
Mainly because dart was built from the ground up to replace JavaScript. Also, it's the language behind Flutter, and Fuschia (Google's next OS) is built with it.
What do you do to gain focus and cut out the noise?

I like the decentralized ledger concept which is fail tolerant, transparent and immutable. Which can solve lot of use cases that is currently solved using a client server architecture and yet not very secure nor fast.

I started my computing skills at Purdue University
I think it was Fortran. Many hours in line as I waited to make my punch cards, do loops, etc. At age 66 I would love to make an app on my smartphone
Boiler up! Lol, I learned Fortran my freshman year at Purdue, in 2000 in the engineering college. I read that the new language specification has some object- oriented principles... maybe it will make a comeback??

Nick, great. I have early on-stage Alzheimer's disease and memory loss. I need something cool and easy to use for Alzheimer's Patients to help them remember things simply. There are millions of people in this country and others that suffer from this disease. It would be great if you checked out altz.org to see what people are going through with dementia, which I also have.

Cool to see other devs using Symfony, as it is (in my opinion) a very good framework that helps you become a better developer.
For example, during the last year, I dramatically improved my understanding of unit testing and object cohesion, because of how the Symfony dependency injection works.

Oh yeah, the past 20 years have taken me through an interesting career in IT, networking, bizdev, and webdev and webdesign. Lately more so in marketing and training. I blog at notagrouch.com and manage a couple dozen other sites.
Expert in various fields, but just good enough as a coder to break stuff. I'm constantly searching for improvements and expanding my knowledge. Currently doing deep dives into SEO with WordPress and without it. I have a love and hate relationship with social networks... and I guess that's about it for my intro post.
Oh yeah... Also paying a lot of attention to the WordPress Gutenberg controversy.
And my own advice a year ago should have been: Start teaching now. Don't get complacent, and start expanding.

Im currently enrolled in a 6 month full stack web development cohort. Im about halfway through the cohort now and it definitely has been challenging. I'm currently focusing on improving my knowledge in JavaScript, Node, and MongoDB. Mainly rewriting an application's back-end. A piece of advise I would've given my younger self is that it's important to have a daily study regime. Even if it's just 10 minutes a day. Have an allocated time set aside for studying. That time compounds!

Hello! I'm Shane and I am a late bloomer with programming. I'm 34 and recently graduated with my associates in Computer Science. I currently work in my companies Creative Tech division, but my role only monitors users in our systems. I'm spending the next year immersing myself in JavaScript, CSS, and HTML to learn front-end development. I learned some in my schooling, but mostly focused on C++ and C#. I like those, but I'm intrigued by JS and all the other languages (python, PHP, etc). I'm focusing on JS for my foundation and then will branch out. I discovered this community through GitHub.
If I could go back a year and talk to myself, I would say start immersing yourself in all things programming now. Don't just rely on your coursework. Go out and discover Dev.to, freeCodeCamp, and anything else to increase my skills. I look forward to learning from you all!

I joined a startup in college for a website administration role (Wordpress). Eventually we needed a customized point-of-sale app so I learned how to code (thanks to CS50 course from Edx) and using Javascript to write a full stack web app (thanks to MEAN.JS framework and their docs - the project was amazing both as a framework and as a learning resource).
It has been 3 amazing years of my life, from learning how to code to building things with my own hands.
Now our startup has a lot of data so I hope that I can learn more about Python and the Jupyter Project so that I can make sense of them.

Hi! I was just brought here by an article I was reading about web development for NEWBIES and since I have been looking for more sources and networking to meet more developers, I figured I would give this a shot. I am currently learning Intermediate/Advanced HTML & CSS and about to dive into JavaScript. I have been coding for a couple of months now and I feel like I've gotten nowhere, lol. I do pretty well at Replicas, researching to get what I want... but I still feel like an imposture! Still, I am not deterred and I only want to learn more. Hi! Sam here — somewhat of a hybrid between teacher, programmer and small time entrepreneur.
After dabbling with code in my previous job, which was hardware based, I was bitten by the code monkey because I swiftly grew the desire to learn more. To quench the thirst, I combined a BSc in Computing at University with a web / graphic design startup: cutting my teeth with web technologies, ultimately build my first real app with Angular1 - theinterestgame.com/#!/landing.
Learning was fun but even more so, was helping my fellow students so I opted to combine the two disciplines and teach Computer Science — Next stop: London!
In the capital I trained to teach to 11 - 18 year olds to code — no easy feat but Kings College London is well known for it’s ability to train teachers and I was given the opportunity to learn from some of the leading researchers and teachers on the scene.
A gruelling but rewarding training year took place in mixed, all boys and all girls schools and, hey presto, a year later and my first ‘proper’ year teaching was in the ‘UK School of the Year’! Woo!
During this year, I taught selection statements, iteration, functions and data structures, as well as help the older students with projects ranging from: simple data input programs with Python + SQL to a tamagotchi style dog game with Unity!
Many students showed interest so I kept the keenos engaged with an after school code club. I enjoyed being the the students but still felt like there was something a little wrong — although the education system was (and still is) heading in the right direction, there is a definite void between what the students are asked to learn and the skills needed for a career!
Right now I’m doing less teaching and more networking and more React(ing).
Being (relatively) new to both programming and teaching, I’m hoping to write some beginners posts on what I’m learning: currently, the wonderful React 😊
Very much hoping to connect with the community to bridge the gap between education and communities like these, which in my humble opinion, should be intertwined.

Hi, I am a newbie web developer from Scotland, looking for an online home where I can hang out with people who know what they are doing XD I want to be a freelancer so I can travel and work on my own stuff as much as possible. I worked for years as a BA with a decent wage, but the career wasn't going anywhere, the office environment was toxic and I wasn't learning anything so I needed a change. I have taken the plunge!
Currently I know the fundamentals of html, css and javascript. I also did a MongoDB course and attempted a few node/express tutorials, but none of that has been much use to me yet :) Currently am finishing off a static site for a local businesses which I built with Bootstrap and few pieces of js. I am also now learning the fundamentals of php so I can create custom wordpress themes and plugins. Am building a wordpress site for another local business and want to build the theme from scratch. I made a fancy svg logo/intro animation for it using greensock.
Am planning on doing a few static sites and wordpress sites to make sure I know the basics well, then will be moving on to full stack apps. Once I have finished these two current projects am going to begin learning Vue.js because I have some ideas for apps that I want to build and after watching a Sarah Drasner vid on Vue, it seems to make sense to me. Am still not very sure of what kind of backend tech I really want to get into first. I have skimmed over a lot of articles about api development, Node, serverless, GraphQL django, traditional php/mySQL etc etc to see which world seems most inviting, but I still don't know enough to make any kind of informed comparison.
The first app I want to build I will make open source, (if it comes out alright XD). It's one of those things that has been in the back of my mind for years. The app will be a notes/documentation app with a focus on making it easy to create semantic connections between bits of content. The app will then use the semantic links to present notes in various different views. I want this app because I have tried all kinds of tools and methods for storing info, but have never felt satisfied with the structure or presentation or flexibility with those methods. I have used markdown notes, mindmaps, outliners, oneNote. I have looked into personal wikis, boostnote, all kinds of things. It has been a bit of an obsession for years to be honest XD Am hoping I can actually build the thing I have been trying to find and learn fullstack in the process! I think this app will be a good first app as it's more complicated than a todo app, but not so complicated that I will melt my brains or never finish it.
I plan on building the frontend of the app with Vue and JSON holding the data and then figure out how to give it a backend for web and desktop. I know that I will be trying to build it into an electron app for desktop, but other than that am not sure what I will use. My understanding is that by working with JSON I will have flexibilty in making the app use different backends and also ensure that any data created in the app can be exported into other formats etc so that users can always control and retain their own data.
Anyway, as you see, I am a rambler XD Better get back to work! Much to learn!

Just heard about dev.to on a podcast and wanted to check it out. I'm a second-career developer, who just started my first full-time position at the age of 41. Before that, I was a music teacher and author, but technology has always been my hobby. Even while teaching, I found myself running multiple websites for various groups, and even started building mobile apps and teaching myself to really become a coder. I took off a year of teaching and tried my hand at entrepreneurship, building unison.school, a tool for music teachers and students, and then landed a more stable remote .Net developer job this April!

I am focused on integration of systems and I keep running into a wall. So this is what I am trying to understand, what does this sentence mean to a programmer. We have a compliance team mapping process in our company, what are you going to do to make us compliant?
In my experience, most programmers never meet eye to eye with management, so why do they care about the company policies. But I say, they should. Or so it would seem. What say all if you?
Ps fun fact. From Alaska and the waters of many inlets are fresh water. Due to the glacier melt. This is not so for more southern inlets as they are salt water being right on the ocean. It has caused more than one eyebrow to raise up. So now you know, we even have a special kind of sand called silt that is formed from the glaciers rubbing against the rocks as they slide down the mountainside! The more you know, right!

This is my big question, should a person learning to code, learn the language(s), first and then move to frameworks and libraries, or vice versa?
I never really learned ruby beyond the basics, but consider myself reasonably fluent in rails, on the other hand I've found for myself personally that javascript needs to be learned to some reasonable extent before any frameworks make sense.

Hmm, Don't waste time on desktop development, mobile development and game engines along with what your primary job is a PHP developer.
You will waste about 3 years of your life each year working on 1 field and hopping to other, every year for 3 years. Which certainly would go to waste.
Stop listing to your Boss about you should be dynamic. He's planning to utilize you, where ever he sees you fit for a salary of single job. At the end you will left with not even close to jack of all and master of none.

The advice I have is more as a consultant, but it's to "Design for Ops". Always keep operations in mind. Clients are not stupid any more and need to manage these things after you're gone. It also is amazing what innovative solutions you'll come up with if you really consider the BAU aspects.

I'm still in the learning process, but I feel very proficient and I can understand a lot of web-related topics, making it easy for me to learn new stuff - mainly "modern" web development; I'm not on my own, though, I feel lucky that I know people to work with, and learn a lot more by having experience with the "real world", and I expect to meet more people and grow! I work on data analysis as well as instrument control. I found this site through github when you announced going open source. I've looked around and it looks like a great community. I've been programming since the late 1970s, but always to support astronomical research or instrument development. I've always focused on using software to solve specific problems, and I've no doubt accumulated decades of bad habits and preconceived notions about software that I hope to overcome by joining a community that will expose me to more up-to-date ideas and practices.
I currently use python a lot, but also work with c, java, and with the commercial interactive data language (IDL). I've gone through phases of language dabbling and, of course, used to program in Fortran and the old IBM JCL (but those were decades ago).
I look forward to exploring this community and learning and hopefully making some contributions. Nice to be here!

My name is Jules. I am a mechanical engineer working usually in aerospace/defense mainly because they pay the best and often have the most fascinating work. I love programming computers as a hobby. I am experienced with Visual Basic, Fortran, PHP, SQL, JavaScript (vanilla), HTML (and the DOM), and CSS (all levels). I don't care for frameworks or libraries as this defeats the challenge (for hobbyists as myself) of self-learning and arriving at unique solutions.

Hi I'm Jon.
I researching a new way to write computer programs. It plays well with most current ways to write them. Using my approach, I am able to embed meaning in code. It is nowhere near as advanced as artificial intelligence. It is level 3 programming where AI is level 5 programming.
I constantly look all over the web for potential collaborators. So far i have found no one involved in the sub-field of software development that I am involved in. This makes me very lonely.
I am hoping to find someone here who has an interest in embedding meaning in code, perhaps someone who has already done it. I would like to learn from them and share my technique with them.

Hello everyone! My name is Antonette. I am working as a help desk tech for GD for about a year. In My spare time, I try to do what I can web development wise. I first started HTML and CSS back in the days when you can put up a marquee on the page as an announcement. However, I went through a stage where I left web development and then I came back to when it is upgrade to HTML 5 and CSS 3.
My first programming language is Java, Python, and then C and C++. I now try out different frameworks in different languages to what works for me and what does not work for me, in its flexibility and what I can use it for my project ideas. My Python is OK, and getting better as I use it for work quite a bit. I work for a very small company that specializes in performance engineering.
I welcome any suggestions for good (concise) ruby and python references that start with more than the very basic "this is how you declare/assign a variable of a given type and these are the control flow constructs" and discuss language idioms and OOD/OOP.

I started designing websites and doing a little bit of basic dev work right back in 2006 when phpBB boards and forum signatures were flavour of the week. I studied computer science at college and fell into a career essentially unrelated to developing/designing at all.
Up until last year I was working freelance in my spare time, mainly making Wordpress sites. Unsatisfied with my career, I left.. and threw myself in to improving my knowledge of modern web development and doing some freelance work on the side. I have been focusing heavily on the MERN stack and everything revolved around it.
I just last week landed a new job with a Data Science company as a Javascript developer. It perfectly suits me as I am still a bit of a tortured artist inside and this role has elements of design in it as well! :p I hope to improve my skills dramatically being around other like minded people and from being put outside of my comfort zone.

I've got experience in everything from JS to C++ to Kotlin, and I've worked across the stack on projects ranging from basic landing pages to massive cloud infrastructure. During my time in consulting, I've worked to help teams transition codebases to take advantage of more modern (cutting/bleeding edge) tech so I'm excited to pass on some of that to you guys, especially tons of Node.js knowledge having picked it up (and haven't put it down much since) almost immediately after it dropped.

I've used many languages and architectures over the years, but have dove deep into c# this past year. I still love c++ more, especially 17, but c# has also made some great improvements since I first used it in 2006 or so.

I've been learning a lot recently about game programming, and its been my current hobby on weekends and after hours. Pygame was a great place to start at a higher level, and now I'm fooling around with SDL in C. Game programming does seem to be some of the more complicated software engineering out there! Kudos to those developers who build their games from scratch.

I've only done as much as the first two FreeCodeCamp certifications. I have also written a client-side script for statistical calculations for a doctor friend all because he would spend 1-2 hours calculating on paper!

At work I primarly use C# to develop desktop applications for windows, mostly in combination with LINQ as almost all apps I develop here have to use MSSQL as their backend database.
In my spare time I usually automate things or try to close gaps between systems I'm working with. As I just switched my whole setup from cywgin to WSL for example, I'm in the process of developing a "wsudo" command to be able to manipulate windows's files/folders from within WSL. A part of the solution uses some C++ code which I'm not very fond of, so if anyone wants to help, please let me know!
I run a few VMs (mostly linux servers) on my own hardware in a datacenter providing services like: Hosting (Ghost/WordPress Blogs), Teamspeak, Nextcloud (Calendar/Contacts/Dropbox) and GitLab for friends and family.
Experimenting with toys like Raspberry Pi's and Arduino's, writing Bash/Fish/AutoIt/Python scripts or improving one of my existing tools, are just some more ways to keep me up at night. I can't remember the last time I went to bed before 2 AM.

I stumbled upon this site via an email from GitHub. I wish I could say I've been coding for some time and/or I have a CS degree. On the contrary, I have a BA in Criminal Justice, Masters in Forensics, and working on my Ph.D. in Public Policy. I completed all of my graduate studies online and prefer it over the brick and mortar route.
I live in San Francisco and work for the government as a contracting officer, which has become a bit dark and less fulfilling than I thought. Not to mention the lack of pay and the cost of rent in the Bay Area.
I decided to take on a Coding Boot Camp and completely reinvent my 33-year-old self. I'm struggling to make sense of it all, but I really enjoy it. I've started pre-work with HTML/CSS and will move on to JS. I can't recall the other programs/languages I'll be learning, but I'm excited.
I'm taking it one day at a time and I've even taken a leave of absences from my doctoral studies to pursue coding (the learning of) full-time. I hope to learn from other #begginers and longtime coders. In the long run, I want to work for a startup and have a purpose. But, for right now I think I need a different key-board. I had no idea that programmers/gammers had special keyboards to make a little more efficient when coding. I'm no gamer but just something I discovered when researching.

So here it is, the advice to young-myself would be (actually it got me thinking longer than I thought, thanks for the question) "Do more investment on Elasticsearch, big-data and data mining isn't scary as it seems to be; Vue was a good choice; think microservice architecture beyond Kubernetes, like on-premise, and get out time to time for God sake. If any time left look into block chain and IoT."
