What kind of music do you listen to while coding? 🎧

Howdy DEV fam! πŸ‘‹πŸ» What's good?

Today's discussion topic is really simple: What kind of music (in terms of music genre), do you listen to while coding? Or do you prefer no music at all? πŸ€”

Let me know in the comments below! πŸ‘‡πŸ»

I'll go first! πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ I don't mind music while coding, but I prefer music with no/minimal lyrics. Lofi works well for me, but I also enjoy a Trap mix or maybe even an EDM mix. 😁

Yeah if there are lyrics it's going to seriously distract me. I'm unable to think about logic / code while English words are being spoken / sung. Easier when it's a language I don't understand but even then it's hard.

I always think the lyrics are deeper and more profound when you don't understand them. Lol!

Glad to hear that.
Idk the general opinion but I think listing to music while working makes it feel like a montage of sort, not a fan of that.
Generally I work for some time then either I listen to Eminem or watch some web series (mostly Fresh Prince on a loop) πŸ˜„

Pretty weird I know . Lol
Hope I'm not the only one doing that...

Well I might be one of the odd ones, but I listen most of the times to either reggaeton, bachata or r&b. I find that they have a vivid rhythm that helps with the way I think. I've tried lo-fi, slowed-reverb and instrumental, but for coding they don't feel rightπŸ˜…. I listen to those when doing creative stuff that require less brain power.

What's with everyone asking about music for devs lately... πŸ€”

I honestly listen to a lot of different genres and would pick basically anything. I even have the tendency to loop one song for a whole day. My comment in another music-related post mentioned jazz, ambient, breakcore, and math rock, but I can name a ton more genres haha. I'm also not picky with lyrics or no lyrics if I'm already familiar with the songs.

I also don't really listen to playlists that often, I'm more of an album person. Can't say I've recently picked up an album either though. :p I've mostly been either looping 1 song or listening to my own playlists to see if they flow well before publishing them in public. Said playlists are short and narrative so not really worth sharing here, I believe.

If I had to pick 1 album to share here, I'd go for this: open.spotify.com/album/7ALFR4o9ZXf...

That was a lot of talking... πŸ˜³πŸ‘‰πŸ‘ˆ

Nah, I'd gladly talk about music over and over again. :p It's a pretty common topic, just surprising that several people have talked about it recently on here. I was just wondering if something was happening that I wasn't aware of.

But yeah, I like broadening my horizons when it comes to genres! I also keep a list of albums I've listened to, but then again, I kinda have a list of everything. Now I must kindly leave because I write another wall of text about music--

It really depends, on focus-heavy work I like things that do not have any lyrics. I usually put on some classical or deep-house. Otherwise, it depends on my mood and can range from hip-hop/rock/pop/etc. My favorite album while spring is beginning is Van Morrison - Down the road. But that is just a guilty pleasure.

I like songs with minimal lyrics with some peaks where the song becomes loud all of a sudden. I suggest Trampoline, or if you want something heavier Rolling in the deep.

When I'm really focused, I don't really mind which songs because I don't hear the songs too well, maybe just the melodies or stuff.

Recommendations:
Shingo Nakamura's remix of Blugazer's Ethereal Concepts (here's a mix youtu.be/WYp9Eo9T3BA). If you're into any kind of mixes, I highly recommend anything Shingo Nakamura does, or Ben BΓΆhmer (link: youtu.be/_jWp5RpEjt0)

Mynoise.net for any type of environmental or "zen" type sound (singing bowls, Japanese garden, etc). If I need to up my tempo, hard driving bass helps. And a trick to get your brain to minimize outside distractions (and even thoughts): make a short playlist of songs you know really well. Put on repeat. By the second repeat, you will quit singing along and start to block out the words. And some of your own distracting thoughts. :) Also works well with songs in a language you don't know.
