Who said you need to work on open source projects made by big corporations? There are many successful open source project which do not depend on corporations (Rust, Firefox, even dev.to is open source). GIMP is a hugely successful open source project which does not depend on corporations too.
Also, I was talking about personal projects. I don't plan on making anything huge but to do what I love even after I leave professional field.
