4 Weeks in at General Assembly

In my last post I talked about my background, why I'm making the career pivot into Data Science, and how I came to start at General Assembly.

Now I guess it's time for an update!

I'm now 4 weeks in to the 12 week immersive and I'd like to talk about what's working and what isn't.

The first week was gaining our bearings and refreshing us on the basics of probability. Seeing as this was largely a recap of the required pre-work we did, I was hoping for slightly more in-depth Python fundamentals. I appreciate them making sure everyone is on the same page, though.

The second week is where I started to really sink my teeth in. Pandas and exploratory data analysis. I may not have enjoyed it much at the time, but now I rather enjoy the data analysis! We presented our first big projects and I while I felt terrible about mine going in, I felt really good about it afterwards.

Week 3, however, was not kind to me. I submitted both of my homework labs half-finished and I still don't really fully understand the basics of Linear Regression. I feel like I really fell behind here. My mental health proceeded to get bad and just... the class is affecting me more than I thought.

But that's not the end of this recap! This week I took more time for my health (... at the cost of making progress on my school work) and I'm feeling much better. As we've gotten further into Logistic Regression and Classification Metrics, some of what confused me last week is starting to fall into place. I know I'm going to be spending all weekend doing the homework I should've been doing during the week, but I think I'll be alright!

Alright, that was a lot of venting. So where does that leave me? I have the basics of how to analyze data and make a model based off it. I'm getting a better idea of what I don't know (understanding my ignorance is a wonderful feeling, honestly). And my capstone project is on the horizon.

Oh, and I'm still waiting on a follow-up call from the recruiter. I think I can safely tell him I'm interested in the world of tech and programming and will come out with a solid understanding of Data Science. I don't know if that's where my heart is, but we've got 8 more weeks till we find out.

I know this is more Diary than article but it was due tonight and I know I'm not in a mindset to write "Linear Regression for Babies." Next week though ;)
