Extremely well put. I admittedly, am a straight white male, but I do see the struggle of under represented groups in software development; the wasted talent of women and minorities who are pushed out or who never persue is such a shame.

As for the rest, I also feel like the coding (usually anyway) is the easy part, company leadership can turn what is otherwise an amazing job into a waking nightmare, and people skills are way undervalued by interviewers.

I really like the points about avoiding toxic managers/workplaces. My personal experience has taught me the following lessons in that regard:

  • Be mindful of cronyism, especially in new management transitions.
  • Recognize when the ship is sinking, and jump ship asap.
  • Avoid complacency in any good or bad company.
  • Never take anything personal, it's just business.

I started a new job ~3 weeks ago and it's the first time I've been called a Software Engineer. Before then I was a developer or Oracle Developer. I don't actively make software, I make applications, so I have a feeling of imposter syndrome that I had previously overcome.

When did you start accepting you were a Software Engineer?
