Unfortunately, a lot of people don't see the value in the time and effort people put into articles. They would prefer to find something wrong with the article—often subjectively—so they can troll the comments. It's a sad reality, but one I've also had to deal with (even here on dev.to which is usually a positive experience).
I don't think I've ever gotten into as big of a debate as you did, but I have run into a few trolls along the way. In general, I write a lot of beginner oriented content, and veterans can sometimes take exception to the way I present the material. For instance, just today I advocated for a stripped down IDE for students, and I got a handful of "why not just use x?" comments. To which, I'm always thinking "well, did you read the article?"
The worst is when a troll quite literally makes an account just to trash your article. One time, I wrote an article about how confusing the concept of substrings can be to new coders, and someone questioned my teaching skills as a result of it.
All I can say is keep your head up, and keep writing! I'd hate for an experience like that to discourage you.
For further actions, you may consider blocking this person and/or reporting abuse
We're a place where coders share, stay up-to-date and grow their careers.
