I feel lucky with my current manager. He believes in career development - even if that means dedicating some of my work hours each week taking a class or working through tutorials/lessons in something that doesn't directly relate to my work. When something goes wrong he reminds me that it's not material and not the end of the world, and that we can fix it. He has goals and we meet briefly on a weekly basis & quarterly for a longer review, but he is otherwise a hands-off type manager who expects his team to manage themselves as the adults we are. He encourages work-life balance, only asks us to work outside normal hours (either stay late or log in remotely) on very rare emergency occasions.
I guess in a summary that would be my ideal manager!
