Absolutely. You will have a better position for a bunch of place. I know a few people with PhD in IT, one working as Project Manager nowadays, the other is currently working as architect w/ some cloud stuff.
Most of the ppl who has PhD for IT has a different perspective in this job type. Many place really like them and always considered as more expert than anyone else with just uni or without papers.

What do you want to do? I mainly do application development. So for me it isn’t useful. If I want to do algorithmic Optimization or work on performance then it would.
I'm thinking of what I do when I become older like 60 or so. It's unlikely that I will work as a developer. For that having a PhD may be helpful because it gives you opportunity to become an executive. That's at least my reasoning. I'm still figuring out whether it's sound or not
