New to web development/ working in the tech sector?

This blog post is the first one of a series of posts that are aimed at all the aspiring web developers out there and those who - like me - want to take a step back and provide some well-needed advice to their past selves. For this particular post, this advice takes the form of outlining something that I learned this week as part of an amazing course that I am completing with an equally amazing organisation - Code Your Future.
Simply put, my first (of many) main pieces of advice to anyone starting or entering the world of tech and web development, use Social Media as a platform where you can reach out to the huge amounts of companies and recruiters looking for people like you. Examples of some social media channels and collaboration platforms that can be useful for this are:

  • Twitter
  • Linked in
  • Slack
  • Instagram
  • DEV.to
  • GitHub

The main way of utilising social media is by using it to build and develop your very own personal brand and profile or (with platforms such as GitHub) to demonstrate your capabilities. Whatever you do - make it something that reflects you and allows you to stand out. An example of some features that can be added to a LinkedIn account are:

  • A detailed intro that outlines what you want an employer to know: image
  • A detailed 'About' section that provides links to previous projects, outlines achievements and showcases YOU to the best of your ability: image

Quick tip - contacting the right people is essential. Don’t be scared to jump out of your comfort zone and contact employees within a company that you want to join or just to connect and gain from their experiences.

Look out for my next post…..
