I do think gendered defaults are odd and old remnants of the past, but I really doubt that's the cause of the problem, e.g. I really doubt someone being called firemen, makes a woman less, especially since at this point in time, the word is now a gender neutral term, the problem are the hidden discrimination/sexism by the person saying the word, if the person saying the word means it in sexist way then it doesn't matter how gendered or gender neutral the word is its going to be offensive every time.
