Well, sorry for that, it’s me again, with my counter-stream opinion.
I have joined dev.to almost two years ago. I had a gut feeling the developers community needs this kind of site to express ourselves in writing for almost ten years before. I was kinda whoa when it finally happened.
Unfortunately, I am two inches from the threshold to exit the community now. Treat me as a freak (as I honestly am,) but I like to read somewhat rocketsciency. I am not interested in how to pass interviews or how to make my first million. Also I am strictly against any kind of censorship, while it’s the topmost rule here so far (I have an experience publishing clean and offense-free writings here to be explicitly switched off to
published: false for no reason save for “we and our readers don’t like this opinion.”)
So my vote would be to have an explicit tag for real tech writings, like “I claim this is for tech-savvy and any tech-savvy is welcome to come to tell me I am wrong”.) Without this the community is gonna became
self-promotion.to or you name it.
Also I think we definitely need an ability to black-list tags (like #career or something) to never see this crap in the feeds—ASAP.
And my last claim would be we indeed need an ability to expose disrespect to the writing (not the person! that is important!) like you all currently want to do it here, so that the writing goes rating-down and is never shown to strangers. Otherwise we’ll scary strangers soon :) SO has invented this for us already: say “writing is bad” for the cost of one your own writing. Or one tenth. Or whatever. But it’s needed.
