So adding a canonical link is helpful for telling search engines where an article appeared first — it helps the SEO of the original source. So, if you're trying to drive traffic back to where you originally posted this article, designating a canonical_url helps.
To add a canonical link, it's slightly different depending on which editor version you're on...
If using basic markdown, the user must write "canonical_url: nameofsite.com/nameofpost" in the front matter of the post.
If using rich + markdown, the user must click the three dots icon near the top of the page to find the input for the canonical URL. Just add it, and make sure to save!
