Freelancing and especially cold calling sounds lonely and unpredictable.

Consider if some stability and guidance working for one company under a senior engineer to mentor your skills and give career advice will help.

Maybe you can work an agency which hires out developers to companies so then you get to work with many clients across industries for variety while still having stability of pay and learning and some fellow devs to work with.

In freelancing you can also specialize. Find some freelancer who makes graphics and needs HTML and pair up on projects. Or if you like design in animations and interactions, find someone who is good and structuring the layout of the site or understands ecommerce.

Also, network with people at coding conferences and related events. Let people know you're looking for freelance gigs and they can bring you on for their project or recommend you to a company. Word of mouth and trust is way stronger for success than putting out adverts whether online or face to face selling.

Failing itself is not bad. It is a chance to learn and improve. To reflect. If you find yourself making the same mistake over and over then you need to adjust something to prevent that and you'll be stronger.
