This is so true. It is difficult to get that PHP interview with a company without knowing the framework they use which is so unfortunate. My first 2 jobs used no framework and if it wasn't for my current boss believing that a "framework is a tool, not a skill" I wouldn't be working with Symfony now. It really wasn't that hard to pick up and I doubt any other framework would be difficult to pick up.
You are correct. What's the difference between a philips and flat head screwdriver? They do the same thing in slightly different ways. Frameworks are the same way.
